Wat Phra That Chom Sak, formerly known as Wat Phra That Doi Ban Yang, is one of Chiang Rai’s revered temples and one of the sacred “Nine Chom Stupas.” Located in Ban Du Subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Rai District, this temple carries deep historical and spiritual significance linked to the Yonok Kingdom.
In simple terms, Wat Phra That Chom Sak is an ancient relic temple where sacred Buddha relics are enshrined. It is closely associated with King Phaya Phangkharat of the Yonok dynasty and remains a respected place for worship, blessings, and peaceful reflection in Chiang Rai.
The history of the temple goes back to the era of Yonok Chai Buri Sri Chiang Saen. During the reign of King Phaya Phangkharat, the 24th ruler of the Yonok dynasty, a revered monk from Kosol in Sudhammavati named Phra Buddhaghosacariya brought 16 Buddha relics from Sri Lanka and offered them to the king. The relics were divided into three parts and enshrined at Doi Chom Thong, Chom Kitti, and Doi Ban Yang, which later became Wat Phra That Chom Sak.
A major restoration took place in 1947 under the leadership of Phra Khruba Khamla Sangwaro. A new stupa was built over the original relic structure to preserve it, and a distinctive raised viharn was also constructed. From that time onward, the temple became known as Wat Phra That Chom Sak.
The temple features a Lanna-style chedi set on a quiet hill surrounded by greenery, creating an atmosphere well suited to meditation and spiritual retreat. Visitors are drawn not only by the sacred relics but also by the calm and simple beauty of the site.
Local belief holds that paying respect at Wat Phra That Chom Sak brings great auspiciousness and invites good things into one’s life. A commonly recited chant at the temple is “Araham vandami dhatuyo sappatthanesu supatipatitā araham vandami sapphaso,” expressing reverence for the sacred relics.
Getting There is easy from Chiang Rai city center. The temple is located in Ban Du and can usually be reached in around 10 to 15 minutes by car. Parking is available near the entrance, and visitors can walk up to the main stupa with ease.
