Founding Background Construction of Wat Neranchara Ram is believed to have begun in the early period of King Rama VI, with a recorded starting point around 1924. Local residents and devoted supporters jointly created a place for religious practice in this coastal area. In its early stage, the temple was relatively small, yet it played an important role in organizing religious activities and served as a gathering point for people in the northern Cha-am area.

 

The most distinctive feature of this temple is the Nine Sealed Gateways Buddha image, created in 1984 with the intention of encouraging visitors to contemplate the Buddhist principle of guarding the senses. The symbolism refers to controlling the nine faculties (such as seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, bodily sensations, and mental activity), along with disciplined speech and conduct, so that defilements do not dominate the mind. This concept aligns with the practice of mindfulness and meditation in Buddhism. As a work of contemporary Buddhist art, it carries profound spiritual meaning, and many visitors come to pay respects and reflect on the teaching embodied by the image.

Current Abbot At present, Wat Neranchara Ram is overseen by Phra Khru Jiraphatthanon (Chen Jiradhammo, also known by some as “Luang Pho Chen”), who has served as the acting abbot since November 2014. The temple’s leadership is responsible for managing temple affairs, organizing religious activities, and continuously supporting the temple’s role for both the community and visitors.

 

Getting to Wat Neranchara Ram There are several ways to reach Wat Neranchara Ram. Visitors can drive via Phetkasem Road toward Cha-am District, then turn onto Ruamjit Road to access the temple easily. The temple is located not far from Cha-am Beach and other local attractions, allowing visitors to plan time for worship, Dhamma learning, and cultural sightseeing within the same trip.
