Mae Tia Waterfall is one of Chiang Mai’s truly “deep-forest” waterfalls. It is located in Doi Kaew Subdistrict, Chom Thong District, within the responsibility area of Ob Luang National Park. This is not an easy check-in spot, but a destination for those who want to experience a real forest—quiet, raw, and sustained by a water system that still actively supports the surrounding community’s ecosystem.

 

The waterfall sits fairly deep in the forest and is impressively large, with an approximate height of 80 meters and a width of about 15 meters. From below, you can see water cascading down a high cliff in tiers, surrounded by dense, dark-green forest. The first impression many visitors get is that it feels “big, quiet, and solemn.” It isn’t flashy like city-accessible waterfalls, but it delivers the power of nature in a direct and honest way.

 

Mae Tia Waterfall has about 4 tiers, with a total walking distance of roughly 5 kilometers from the starting point to the main waterfall area. Most of the route is a forest trail that requires time and energy, but the reward is a pristine headwater forest atmosphere—flowing water, moving air, and a level of silence where signs of the city feel completely absent.

Although Mae Tia Waterfall can be visited year-round, the period from late rainy season to early winter often offers the most complete scenery: fuller water flow, lush green forest, and cooler air. During the rainy season, extra caution is needed due to the risk of flash floods and trail conditions.

 

Getting There From Chiang Mai city, take Highway No. 108 (Chiang Mai – Hot) toward Chom Thong District. Upon reaching Chom Thong, turn right near the district office or next to Wat Sob Tia, then continue toward Sob Tia Subdistrict. The distance from Chom Thong is about 15 kilometers. From there, you must continue on foot along a forest trail to reach the waterfall.

 

If traveling by public transport, take a Chiang Mai – Chom Thong bus, then hire a motorcycle taxi or local vehicle to reach the trailhead, before continuing on foot to the waterfall.
