Koh Sichang

Koh Sichang is a large island in the Gulf of Thailand, located about 12 kilometers off the coast of Si Racha in Chonburi Province. It serves both as an international anchorage for cargo ships and as a distinctive tourist destination. Unlike bustling beach resorts such as Pattaya, Koh Sichang retains its local charm, enriched with history and spirituality. Visitors can choose either a one-day trip or stay overnight to fully enjoy its atmosphere. The main community lies on the eastern side of the island at Tha Thewawong Pier, known locally as Tha Lang. From here, motorized three-wheeled taxis, or “Skylabs,” provide convenient transport to attractions around the island.

 

The island offers a variety of attractions. One of the most revered sites is Chao Pho Khao Yai Shrine, a sacred cave shrine blending Chinese and Thai architectural styles. Locals and visitors alike come to pay their respects, and the site also offers panoramic views of the community and houses along the island’s eastern shore. Further up the same hill lies the Mondop Footprint of the Buddha, enshrined here during the reign of King Rama V. This spot doubles as a holy site and a scenic viewpoint with sweeping views of the surrounding sea.

 

On the western side lies Chong Khao Khad, a striking natural landmark where a mountain appears to have been split in two. When passing by boat, the unique landscape is clearly visible. A wooden bridge here allows for a leisurely walk and scenic viewpoints, especially at sunset. Nearby is Hin Klom Beach, famed for its smooth, rounded stones of various sizes, a natural wonder that also holds royal history—King Rama V once had a pavilion here to enjoy the sea views.

 

Another highlight is Chudhadhuj Palace, built as a royal summer residence during King Rama V’s reign. The grounds feature several historic buildings, including Wattana Mansion, a gingerbread-style wooden residence; Phongsri Hall, an octagonal pavilion; Apirom Hall; and Asdangkhanimitr Temple, which uniquely blends Thai and Western architecture. The original teakwood palace that once stood here was later moved to Bangkok and rebuilt as Vimanmek Mansion. Surrounding the complex are ponds, wells, a pier, and a lighthouse that still mark the area’s historical significance.

 

For those seeking a quiet beach, Tham Khao Pang Beach on the island’s western side is ideal. Its wide sandy shoreline, clear water, and tranquil atmosphere make it perfect for swimming and relaxation.

 

Getting around the island is easiest by renting a motorized tricycle taxi from Tha Thewawong Pier. Fares range between 150–250 baht per circuit depending on distance and time, and within just over an hour visitors can circle the island and see its main attractions.

 

Traveling from Bangkok is straightforward: buses depart from Ekkamai Bus Terminal to Si Racha, arriving near Robinson Department Store. From there, a motorbike taxi or tricycle taxi can take you to Koh Loy Pier. Passenger ferries run daily, with one-way fares of about 50–60 baht and a travel time of 40–45 minutes. Boats depart hourly from 07:00 until around 18:00, with some schedules extending to 19:00. Return ferries from Koh Sichang to Si Racha begin as early as 06:30, with the last departures in the evening. As schedules may change seasonally, travelers are advised to confirm details before setting out.

 

 

 

One-Day Itinerary on Koh Sichang A single day is enough to explore Koh Sichang’s highlights. Start in the morning by taking the ferry from Koh Loy Pier, Si Racha, arriving around 8 AM. Begin with a visit to Chao Pho Khao Yai Shrine for worship and panoramic views, then continue uphill to the Mondop Buddha Footprint. Next, head to Chudhadhuj Palace to stroll through its historic grounds and admire the unique architecture. After lunch at a local seafood restaurant, spend the afternoon at Chong Khao Khad, walking along the wooden bridge and enjoying the sea breeze. If time allows, relax at Tham Khao Pang Beach before watching the sunset at Chong Khao Khad. Conclude the day by returning to the pier for the ferry back to Si Racha in the evening.
