Ang Sila

Ang Sila, located in Chonburi Province, is a well-known seaside community just about 5 kilometers from downtown Chonburi. With its prime location along the coast, it has long been an important fishing village in eastern Thailand, especially renowned for oyster and mussel farming, which are the main sources of livelihood for the locals. Visitors to the area are greeted with the authentic atmosphere of a traditional fishing village, where they can watch fishing boats heading out to sea and returning with their catch. The story of these stone mortars dates back to the period after World War II, when Teochew Chinese immigrants settled in Ang Sila. They discovered the abundance of fine-grained stones in the area and began crafting them into mortars, essential tools in Thai cooking for making dishes such as spicy papaya salad, chili paste, and curry pastes. These mortars quickly gained popularity because of their durability and smooth texture, which doesn’t alter the taste of the food. Over time, local artisans expanded their craftsmanship beyond mortars to include sacred boundary stones (luk nimit) for temples, as well as stone sculptures like elephants, horses, lions, and decorative garden statues. These creations not only generate income for the community but have also become sought-after souvenirs for visitors.

 

Ang Sila also carries historical and cultural significance. In the past, it was one of Thailand’s oldest seaside resort towns. During the reign of King Rama V, a royal seaside pavilion was constructed here as a summer retreat. The pavilion, designed in European architectural style, still stands today as a historical landmark, reflecting the area’s prosperity and importance as a seaside retreat in earlier times.

 

From a tourism perspective, Ang Sila caters to a wide range of travelers. It’s perfect for those who love fresh seafood, shoppers seeking high-quality local crafts, or visitors wanting to experience the charm of a traditional coastal town.
