Sea of Mist at Khao Kho, Phetchabun is one of Thailand’s most iconic natural attractions, especially during the cool season. In winter, the valleys of Khao Kho District become covered with thick layers of mist, creating a breathtaking view that resembles a vast ocean of clouds stretching endlessly across the mountains.

 

This phenomenon is caused by temperature differences between the ground and the surrounding air. During cold nights, moisture condenses into mist and settles in the valleys. As the sun rises, sunlight gradually illuminates the mist, creating a soft glowing effect that enhances the beauty of the landscape.

 

Khao Kho’s mountainous terrain and elevation of approximately 600–1,000 meters above sea level make it an ideal location for mist formation. This is why the area consistently offers one of the best sea of mist experiences in Thailand.

 

The best time to visit is between October and February, when the weather is cool and humidity levels are high. Early mornings, especially after rainfall, offer the highest chance of seeing dense mist.

 

Camping and overnight stays are very popular in Khao Kho. Visitors often stay in mountain resorts or camping grounds to wake up early and enjoy the mist at sunrise. The peaceful atmosphere and cool climate make it a perfect destination for relaxation.

 

In addition to the sea of mist, nearby attractions such as Wat Pha Sorn Kaew, Khao Kho viewpoints, windmill fields, and waterfalls provide a diverse travel experience.

 

Getting There is easiest by private car. From Phetchabun city, take Highway 2196 toward Khao Kho. The journey takes approximately 1–1.5 hours.
