Wat Phumin is one of the most iconic and historically significant temples in Nan Province, located in Nai Wiang Subdistrict, Mueang Nan District. It is situated near Nan National Museum and Wat Phra That Chang Kham, making it a central landmark within the old town area.

 

The temple was built in 1596 during the reign of Chao Chetabut Phrommin. Originally named “Wat Phrommin,” the name later evolved into “Wat Phumin.” It has long served as a royal temple, playing an important role in religious and community life in Nan.

 

The most distinctive feature of Wat Phumin is its unique cruciform (four-entrance) architecture, which is the only one of its kind in Thailand. The building appears to rest on the backs of two mythical Naga serpents, creating a striking and symbolic design.

 

The structure combines the functions of an ordination hall, viharn, and main chedi within a single building. The east-west axis serves as the viharn, while the north-south axis functions as the ordination hall. This design demonstrates advanced architectural planning and spiritual symbolism.

 

Wat Phumin gained national recognition when its image was printed on the 1-baht banknote during World War II. A replica of its viharn can also be found at Ancient City (Muang Boran) in Samut Prakan Province.

 

After approximately 300 years, the temple underwent major restoration in 1867 during the reign of Chao Ananta Worritthidet. This restoration took seven years and resulted in the creation of the famous mural paintings inside the temple.

 

The murals, known locally as “Hoop Taem,” depict not only Buddhist Jataka stories but also everyday life in Nan. These paintings provide valuable insight into the culture, traditions, clothing, and social interactions of the people during that era.

 

The most famous mural is the image of Pu Man and Ya Man, often referred to as the “Whisper of Love.” It shows a man leaning toward a woman as if whispering, symbolizing intimacy and affection. The bold use of color and composition gives the painting a modern artistic feel.

 

Other murals illustrate traditional practices such as “Yu Khuang,” where young men and women met in the evenings under parental supervision. Scenes of trade, weaving, daily life, and interactions with different ethnic groups are also vividly portrayed.

 

Inside the temple, four Buddha images face the four cardinal directions, reflecting the structure’s cruciform design and symbolizing the spread of Buddhist teachings in all directions.

 

Getting There is very convenient. Wat Phumin is located in the center of Nan city, within walking distance of major attractions. Visitors can easily reach the temple by car, bicycle, or on foot.
