Wat Baan Mai is a community temple in Baan Mai, Moo 2, Mae Kha Tuan Subdistrict, Sob Moei District, Mae Hong Son Province. Its importance comes not only from religion, but also from the historical memory carried in the name of the village itself. This temple stands in a place where local oral history remembers destruction during the Thai-Burmese wars, and that memory still shapes the identity of the community today.

 

The temple was established in 1931 and officially received permission to become a temple in the same year. It later received royal boundary recognition for ordination purposes in 1995. These details show that Wat Baan Mai developed from a village temple into a fully recognized temple under the Maha Nikaya order. Today, the temple is under the care of Phra Prasit Tapasilo.

 

One of the most distinctive aspects of Wat Baan Mai is the origin of its name. Local elders say that the village was once burned by Burmese troops during the Thai-Burmese wars, and because of that event the place came to be known as “Baan Mai,” or “burned village.” This gives the temple a strong historical and emotional meaning. It is not simply a temple in a rural village, but a spiritual center in a place marked by memory, loss, and recovery.

 

The temple setting also reflects village life very clearly. Its northern side borders a canal, the southern side borders a school, the eastern side borders forest, and the western side borders a public road.
