Inthanon Lady’s Slipper Orchid Conservation Center is located in Khun Yuam District, Mae Hong Son Province. It is an important national conservation site dedicated to preserving rare plant species, particularly the Inthanon lady’s slipper orchid, a unique wild orchid once found in high-altitude forests of northern Thailand. The center sits on a hillside surrounded by pine forests, offering a cool climate and serene atmosphere year-round. The center originated from a royal initiative on natural resource conservation. In 1993, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit gave a directive to conserve the Inthanon lady’s slipper orchid, which was at risk of extinction due to overharvesting from the wild. In 1994, the Third Army Region collaborated with the Faculty of Agriculture, Chiang Mai University, to establish this center. It has since become a project of both national and community significance.

 

One of the center’s strengths is the use of tissue culture technology for orchid propagation. This method allows for rapid and efficient production of healthy plantlets that can be successfully grown. The center distributes these seedlings to local villagers for cultivation trials. Successful growers can turn this into a sustainable source of income. This approach reduces illegal collection from forests and helps restore natural ecosystems.

 

The Inthanon lady’s slipper orchid is a distinctive species with bright yellow flowers shaped like a slipper, which gives rise to its name. It thrives in cool and humid environments typical of high mountain areas in northern Thailand. Seeing this orchid in the wild is rare, making the conservation center highly valuable.

 

The best time to visit is from late November to January, when the orchids bloom beautifully. January is considered the peak season, with rows of vibrant yellow flowers filling the greenhouse, creating a striking and memorable दृश्य.

 

In addition to orchid nurseries, the center offers educational areas where visitors can learn about plant conservation, orchid life cycles, cultivation techniques, and environmental importance, enhancing the experience beyond simple sightseeing.

 

The surrounding atmosphere is peaceful and natural. Dense pine forests provide shade and maintain cool temperatures throughout the year. The sound of wind through the trees and fresh air creates a relaxing environment, perfect for escaping urban life.

 

Nearby, visitors can also explore temperate flower gardens, adding variety to the experience. It is possible to spend an entire day walking, taking photos, and enjoying the local way of life.

 

Getting There The journey can start from Doi Mae U-Kho Bua Tong fields, a well-known tourist attraction. From there, take the route toward Mae Surin Waterfall. The first section is about 1 km of dirt road downhill through a small village, followed by a junction leading to a concrete road. Turn right and continue for about 1.5 km to reach the center. Visitors are advised to use vehicles suitable for mountainous terrain or hire local transport from Khun Yuam District, which costs approximately 700 THB.

 

This destination can easily be combined with nearby attractions such as Doi Mae U-Kho Bua Tong fields during blooming season, Mae Surin Waterfall, and mountain viewpoints offering sea-of-mist scenery at certain times of the year, making the trip worthwhile and diverse.
