Wat Tha Hin Som is a small yet historically significant Buddhist temple located in Moo 7, Tha Hin Som Village, Mueang Pon Subdistrict, Khun Yuam District, Mae Hong Son Province. Officially established in 1875 (B.E. 2418), this temple belongs to the Mahanikaya sect and reflects the traditional rural lifestyle of northern Thailand.

 

The temple originally began as a modest monastic residence founded by local villagers, Pho Thao Janta and Mae Thao Jankham. With strong faith in Buddhism, they created a place for monks to reside and practice Dhamma. At that time, Phra Wong served as the head monk. As the community grew and more monks joined, the site was officially elevated to a temple in 1875 and named “Wat Tha Hin Som,” a name that has remained unchanged ever since.

 

The name “Tha Hin Som” is believed to reflect the area's geographical features in the past, possibly referring to orange-colored stones or a distinctive riverbank. The temple occupies an area of approximately 2 rai, 2 ngan, and 73 square wah. Despite its modest size, it serves as a spiritual center for the local community.

 

The atmosphere of Wat Tha Hin Som is peaceful, simple, and deeply connected to nature. Surrounded by mountains and rural landscapes, the temple offers a quiet retreat away from urban life. The architecture is modest, consisting of essential religious structures such as an ordination hall, a multipurpose pavilion, and monks’ residences.
