Wat Inthakhil is an important historical temple located in Pa Sang District, Lamphun Province. It is best known as the site of the ancient city pillar, known as “Inthakhil,” which once served as the spiritual center of Wiang Pa Sang. The temple plays a significant role in both religious practice and local cultural identity.

 

The temple is situated at 458 Ban Pa Sang, Pa Sang Subdistrict, Pa Sang District, Lamphun Province. It belongs to the Maha Nikaya order and covers an area of approximately 3 rai and 22 square wah. Despite its modest size, the temple holds deep historical and cultural value, especially due to its connection with the former city of Wiang Pa Sang.

 

Wat Inthakhil was established on May 13, 1794 by a royal deputy ruler during the period when Pa Sang functioned as an ancient city. The temple was not only a religious center but also part of the urban and administrative structure of the time. The Inthakhil pillar was placed within the temple grounds as a symbol of stability, protection, and prosperity for the community.

 

The Inthakhil pillar is the most important sacred object of the temple. It is believed to house spiritual power that protects the town and its people. Locals and visitors come to pay respect, make offerings, and seek blessings for success, protection, and well-being.

 

Another important structure within the temple is the chedi, built in 1952. Alongside the viharn, ubosot, sermon hall, and monks’ residences, these structures continue to serve religious functions and reflect the devotion of the local community.

 

The temple received its official boundary status (Visungamasima) on October 8, 1965, confirming its importance as a fully recognized Buddhist temple.

 

A key annual tradition at Wat Inthakhil is the “Khan Dok Offering Ceremony,” where people bring flowers and offerings to worship the city pillar. This event takes place during the northern lunar calendar, around May to June, and represents the continuation of ancient Lanna beliefs.

 

Getting There is convenient from Lamphun city by taking Highway 106 toward Pa Sang District. The temple is located within Ban Pa Sang community, making it easily accessible by car or motorcycle.
