Later, in 1892, the temple was further developed, leading to the construction of additional religious structures that enhanced its role as a fully established Buddhist temple.

 

The original name of the temple was “Wat San Khao Noi,” derived from a historical event during the Hariphunchai period. A local ruler named Chao Maha Pharabodi Ratchaphuthorn Boworn established a rice storage facility in the village. Because the granary was small, the area became known as “Khao Noi,” meaning “small rice storage,” and the temple was named accordingly. Over time, the name was changed to “Wat Chang Khao Noi Nuea” to distinguish it from another temple with a similar name.

 

The temple features complete monastic structures typical of Lanna temples, including a viharn, ubosot, sermon hall, scripture hall, and bell tower. The viharn houses a Chiang Saen-style Buddha image, known for its graceful and refined appearance, representing the artistic excellence of Northern Thai craftsmanship.

 

Another important landmark within the temple is the “Chedi Chom Yong,” an ancient stupa that reflects historical architectural styles and serves as an important symbol of Buddhism in the area. Additionally, the temple preserves local manuscripts written in the traditional Lanna language, which are valuable records of religious teachings and local wisdom.

 

Wat Chang Khao Noi Nuea also plays a vital role in education and community welfare. It has established a funeral welfare association and an educational fund known as “Buddhawongthadanithi,” as well as a local language school aimed at preserving Lanna linguistic and cultural heritage.
