Ku Hueang-Ku Pa Lan in Lamphun is an important ancient site in Ban Thi District, located within Wat Ku Pa Lan, Village No. 8, Ban Si Don Chai, Ban Thi Subdistrict, Ban Thi District, Lamphun Province. The site is suitable for travelers interested in Lamphun history, Lanna ancient architecture, local Buddhist heritage, and old stucco decoration that reflects the cultural memory of the Ban Thi community.

Ku Pa Lan is a mandapa-shaped brick and stucco ancient structure located behind the viharn of Wat Ku Pa Lan. Its lower base is a square platform, followed by a decorative moulded base known in Thai architectural terminology as bua luk kaeo ok kai. Although many of its stucco sculptures are now weathered, the remaining traces still reveal the artistic and archaeological value of the monument.

Ku Hueang is another ancient structure in the same cultural group, located in Ban Si Don Chai, Ban Thi Subdistrict. It is a small mandapa-shaped brick structure with stucco finishing. The building has a square form from base to top, with wall projections on 4 sides. The eastern side has an entrance, while the other 3 sides are solid walls decorated with niches and stucco motifs. Important decorative details include bead-like patterns, floral motifs, leaf designs, a dharma wheel, a peacock motif, and a horse motif.

Local oral history says that this area was once an old temple site. Later, war and migration caused the temple to become abandoned before a new temple was established in the area. This background explains the name Wat Ku Pa Lan and shows that Ku Hueang and Ku Pa Lan are not merely ruined structures; they are part of the shared memory of the Ban Thi community.

Several ancient ku-style monuments are found in Ban Thi and nearby areas, but Ku Pa Lan and Ku Hueang remain among the most distinctive. Ku Pa Lan has been registered as an ancient monument by the Fine Arts Department, giving the site importance as architectural evidence, artistic heritage, and a valuable part of Lamphun’s local history.

Getting There is convenient by private car from Lamphun city. Travelers can follow the road toward Ban Thi District, continue to Ban Thi Subdistrict and Ban Si Don Chai, and enter Wat Ku Pa Lan within the local community. The site can be combined with a cultural route covering Ban Thi community attractions, Wat Phra That Hariphunchai, Wat Chamadevi, and Hariphunchai National Museum in Lamphun city.

Visitors should explore the site respectfully because it is both a temple compound and an ancient monument. Climbing, touching, scratching, or leaning on the old structures should be avoided. Careful visitation helps preserve the fragile stucco decorations and allows this small but meaningful heritage site to remain part of Lamphun’s cultural landscape.
