Ban Mae Khanat Karen Village is a Pga K’nyau Karen community in Tha Kat Subdistrict, Mae Tha District, Lamphun Province. Located at 99 Moo 8, the village is known for its simple way of life, ethnic dress, traditional weaving, and handmade textiles passed down through generations.

The name Mae Khanat is connected with the Mae Khana stream, also referred to as Mae Khanat River, which flows through the village. This natural setting has shaped the community’s relationship with land, water, cotton, and local craftsmanship. A visit here offers more than shopping; it is a cultural learning experience centered on Karen identity and everyday life.

One of the most distinctive features of the village is traditional clothing. Married women wear red tube skirts decorated with handwoven patterns, Job’s tears beads, and red fabric details. Unmarried women wear long white dresses decorated with colored patterns, while men traditionally wear red shirts with local trousers or sarongs. These garments reflect cultural identity, social meaning, and the skill of local weavers.

Textile production in Ban Mae Khanat is deeply rooted in daily life. Many villagers still make textiles from the beginning of the process, including growing cotton, spinning thread, weaving cloth, dyeing, decorating, and adding Job’s tears beadwork. Each piece of cloth represents patience, inherited knowledge, and the continuity of Karen heritage.

The village has a local weaving group that produces and sells Karen textiles and hill-tribe products such as shawls, blankets, loincloths, clothing, shoulder bags, and handwoven fabrics. These products are meaningful souvenirs because they are made by community artisans and carry the story of the village.

Visitors can learn about backstrap weaving, natural dyeing, bead embroidery, and local textile making. The village is suitable for travelers interested in ethnic culture, handmade crafts, community-based tourism, and Northern Thai highland communities.

Getting There Travel along Highway 1033, then turn into the village for about 4 km. Private vehicles are recommended, and daytime visits are best for meeting the weaving group and exploring the community respectfully.
