Wat Huai Ha is a historic community Buddhist temple located at 250, Ban Huai Ha, Moo 7, Ban Hong Subdistrict, Ban Hong District, Lamphun Province. Affiliated with the Mahanikaya order, the temple was established in 1857 and received its Wisungkham Sima on January 31, 1962. The temple began on public village land covering 2 rai and 2 ngan. Local villagers worked together to clear the land, prepare the site, and build temporary monastic structures for religious use. This early history reflects the strong relationship between the temple and the community, where faith and local cooperation played a central role in creating a permanent Buddhist center for Ban Huai Ha.

 

Phra Suwan Suwanno was later appointed as the first abbot of Wat Huai Ha. Under his leadership, the temple developed from a modest village religious site into a more established community temple. The presence of an official abbot helped strengthen Buddhist activities, support regular religious ceremonies, and create continuity in the temple’s role as a spiritual center for villagers.

 

In 1976, Phra Khru Rattanasarnsunthorn, the abbot at that time, together with local supporters, purchased an additional plot of land measuring 1 rai, 2 ngan, and 89 square wah to expand the temple area. This expansion shows how the temple continued to grow alongside the community and how villagers remained involved in supporting its development.

 

Today, Wat Huai Ha occupies 4 rai and 89 square wah of temple land and has one additional monastic land plot. The temple contains an ordination hall, a viharn, a chedi, a multipurpose pavilion, and monks’ residences. These structures support both monastic activities and community gatherings, making the temple an important religious and social space in Ban Huai Ha.

 

The granting of Wisungkham Sima on January 31, 1962 was an important milestone in the temple’s history. It gave the ordination hall official status for monastic ceremonies, strengthening the temple’s formal role within the Thai Sangha system. From that point onward, Wat Huai Ha became more complete as a local Buddhist temple capable of supporting key religious rites.

 

Wat Huai Ha is also home to the Wat Huai Ha Sunday Buddhist Study Center. This role gives the temple educational importance beyond worship and ceremonies. It helps children and young people learn Buddhist teachings, ethics, and local cultural values, keeping the connection between the younger generation and the temple alive.

 

The temple is currently associated with Phra Nikorn Jantapachoto as acting abbot. For travelers, Wat Huai Ha offers a calm village-temple atmosphere rather than a crowded tourist experience. Getting There is most convenient by private car. From Lamphun city, drive toward Ban Hong District, then continue to Ban Hong Subdistrict and Ban Huai Ha, Moo 7. The temple can be included in a cultural route with nearby sites such as Wat Phra Chao Ton Luang, Wat Ban Hong Luang, the scripture hall at Wat Pa Puai, Tham Luang Pha Wiang Cave, and Wat Phra Phutthabat Sam Yot.
