Wat Ku Pa Lan is located in Ban Si Don Chai, Village No. 8, Ban Thi Subdistrict, Ban Thi District, Lamphun Province. This temple is recognized as one of the most historically significant sites in Ban Thi, as it preserves an ancient Lanna-style stupa known as “Ku Pa Lan” or “Ku Hueang,” which has been officially registered as an archaeological site.

 

The temple covers approximately 4 rai 3 ngan 40 square wah. It was officially established as a temple in 1982 and later received royal boundary consecration in 1990. The current abbot is Phra Khru Praphat Worakan (Techawaro). Today, the temple functions both as a place of worship and as a site of historical and archaeological importance.

 

The highlight of Wat Ku Pa Lan is the ancient stupa, which represents early Lanna architectural style. The structure features four arched niches decorated with delicate stucco patterns. Each side of the stupa displays different motifs, reflecting the craftsmanship and artistic diversity of the period.

 

Historical records and local legends indicate that this area is closely connected to King Mangrai after his conquest of Hariphunchai. He established a new settlement in the plains near Doi Wiang, where the Mae Kuang River flows. This site is considered one of the earliest locations associated with the expansion of the Lanna Kingdom before the establishment of Wiang Kum Kam and later Chiang Mai.

 

According to the Chiang Mai chronicles, King Mangrai resided in this early settlement for a short period before a major flood devastated the area. The disaster forced him to relocate his capital, first to Wiang Kum Kam and later to Chiang Mai. As a result, the Ban Thi area became a historical remnant of an early Lanna city that was eventually abandoned.

 

The architectural style of Ku Pa Lan shares similarities with Wat Ched Yot in Chiang Mai, particularly in the stucco patterns and structural design. This similarity suggests that both sites belong to the same artistic period of early Lanna civilization, making Wat Ku Pa Lan an important reference point for researchers and visitors interested in Lanna art and architecture.

 

In 1977, local villagers collaborated to restore the abandoned site and reestablish it as a functioning temple. With the support of monks and the community, Wat Ku Pa Lan became an active religious center once again. Today, it continues to serve as a place for merit-making and community gatherings.

 

Getting There is convenient by private car. From Highway 11, head toward Ban Thi District, then continue to Ban Si Don Chai. The temple is located within the village area and can be easily accessed via local roads.
