Wat Lak Kaeo is located in Lak Kaeo Subdistrict, Wiset Chai Chan District, Ang Thong Province. It is an old temple that has long played an important role in the local community. The temple is not only a place for Buddhist religious ceremonies but also serves as a center of community life, culture, and faith for local residents.
In the past, the Lak Kaeo community was a small agricultural village where most residents earned their living through rice farming and relied heavily on nature. The temple therefore played an important role as a spiritual center where villagers gathered to make merit, listen to sermons, and perform religious ceremonies according to Buddhist traditions.
Wat Lak Kaeo has a peaceful and shady atmosphere that is suitable for merit-making and meditation. Inside the temple grounds are important religious structures such as the ordination hall (ubosot), a sermon hall, and community activity areas that villagers can use for various events.
About 100 years ago, the area of Lak Kaeo was still a small rural settlement where people lived simple lives. According to local folklore passed down through generations, the area where Wat Lak Kaeo now stands was once filled with many orange jasmine trees. Their white blossoms released a fragrant scent throughout the village, and villagers referred to this place as the “Lan Dok Kaeo,” or the Field of Jasmine Flowers.
Later, a mysterious event occurred when all the jasmine trees in the area suddenly died without any known cause. Not long after that, the weather began to change. The rains that once came regularly disappeared, leading to severe drought in the village.
Rice fields that were once fertile began to wither due to lack of water. The canals that previously held abundant water became dry, causing many fish to die. This situation created great hardship for the villagers.
The villagers gathered together to consult with the village leader to find a solution to the drought. The village leader proposed that the community should build a temple as a spiritual center where people could pray for prosperity and the return of rainfall.
The villagers agreed and cooperated in building a temple on the former jasmine field. The temple was named “Wat Lak Kaeo,” and eventually the village itself adopted the name Lak Kaeo, which later became the name of the subdistrict.
After the temple was established, villagers believed that good fortune returned to the community. Rain began to fall again and rice fields became fertile once more. This story has since become a local legend that continues to be told to this day.
Inside the ordination hall of Wat Lak Kaeo is the principal Buddha image known as “Luang Pho Wat Lak Kaeo.” This Buddha statue is highly revered by the local people, who frequently visit the temple to pray for success, prosperity, and happiness in their lives.
As the main temple of Lak Kaeo Subdistrict, Wat Lak Kaeo is also the center for important community events. These include merit-making ceremonies, Kathina robe offerings, forest robe offerings, Thet Mahachat sermons, and traditional Songkran celebrations.
