Pitukro Waterfall in Tak Province is one of the most beautiful and unique waterfalls in Thailand, famously known as the "Heart-Shaped Waterfall." It is located within the Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary, near the peak of Doi Mango Sam Mun, and adjacent to the Thailand–Myanmar border in Mae Chan Subdistrict, Umphang District, Tak Province. Surrounded by lush green forests and abundant nature, it is a destination for travelers seeking to experience the profound beauty of nature in its most authentic form.

The name “Pitukro” comes from the local Karen language, with “Pitu” meaning hut and “Kro” meaning stream, reflecting the waterfall’s location in a deep valley. It is not the same as “Preto Lo Su,” as often mistakenly referred to. The surrounding forest remains pristine and shaded, making every visit to this waterfall a rare and valuable experience.

Pitukro Waterfall is a large waterfall, with water cascading down from the summit of Doi Mango Sam Mun across two main cliffs. From a distance, the white streams flow down into a heart-shaped pool about 500 meters below. The green forest contrasts beautifully with the white water, creating an ideal photo opportunity for tourists and photography enthusiasts. The heart shape is most visible during the rainy season, from June to October, when the water volume is at its peak.

Accessing Pitukro Waterfall is not easy, as it is located deep within the forest. It requires at least a two-day, one-night trek, so most tour operators organize a three-day, two-night trip to prevent exhaustion. The journey begins in Umphang District, Tak Province, where tourists can arrange guides and transport to the village of Kui Lertor, the starting point for the trek to the waterfall.

The trail begins at Kui Lertor village, taking about 3–4 hours to reach the campsite near the waterfall, followed by an additional 1–2 hours to reach Pitukro Waterfall. The route has several sections: the first kilometer is slippery, requiring suitable shoes and walking sticks; the second passes through cornfields; the third crosses small streams and minor forest areas surrounded by mountains; and the fourth enters the deep forest with steep and slippery terrain that requires caution.

For those wishing to climb to the summit of Doi Mango Sam Mun, preparation is crucial. The peak is approximately 1,600 meters above sea level, about 9–10 kilometers from the campsite near the waterfall, taking 4–5 hours to hike. The trail is narrow and steep, with some ridges, so proper preparation of physical condition, clothing, footwear, and equipment is essential.

Travelers to Pitukro Waterfall should prepare both physically and in terms of supplies, including food, water, clothing, hiking shoes, rain gear, flashlight, walking sticks, pain relievers, personal medication, and mosquito and tick protection. Some gear may need to be carried personally as porters are limited. Costs start at around 2,500 baht per person, depending on group size and tour provider.

Pitukro Waterfall is not only a stunning natural attraction but also a challenging and memorable trekking experience. It is perfect for adventure travelers wanting to immerse themselves in pristine forest and a uniquely shaped waterfall. With careful planning and preparation, a visit to Pitukro Waterfall offers lasting impressions, from the journey itself to the spectacular natural scenery encountered.

It is a key destination for those seeking to experience the authentic beauty of Thai nature. It also serves as a learning site about the ecological integrity of the forest and montane rainforest systems, making a trip to Pitukro Waterfall not just tourism but an educational and deeply connective encounter with nature.
