Wat Aranyik in Phitsanulok Province is an ancient temple of great historical, artistic, and cultural significance. Its origins date back to the Sukhothai period, a time when Buddhism flourished, and temples were often built outside the city walls. These temples were commonly referred to as “forest temples” or “Aranyik,” meaning a place surrounded by nature and forest, suitable for monks to practice meditation and asceticism. The establishment of Wat Aranyik reflects the strong faith in Buddhism during that era, as well as the belief in creating spiritual sanctuaries for both monks and laypeople.

The temple was founded around 1620 BE and was officially granted wisungkamasima (boundary for monastic ordination) on July 13, 2009 CE, affirming its importance and continuity through the centuries. The architectural remains found here, such as the principal stupa built in Sinhalese style with a circular base and a bell-shaped body that now remains half intact, indicate its antiquity and evidence of several restorations over time. These restorations resulted in an intriguing mixture of architectural styles.

Within the temple grounds, visitors can also find the ruins of an old ordination hall and stone boundary markers (bai sema) from the Sukhothai period, as well as Buddha images in different artistic styles including Chiang Saen, Sukhothai, and Ayutthaya. These artistic relics reflect the cultural blending and the deep-rooted Buddhist faith carried through different historical periods. Surrounding the temple mound is an ancient moat, a common feature of temples from the Sukhothai era, serving both as a boundary and as a means to create a tranquil environment.

In more recent history, the temple was revived during the modern period, with a new temple built in 1926 CE, around the time of World War I. Today, Wat Aranyik is located in Moo 6, Ban Nong Pla Khao, Aranyik Subdistrict, Mueang District, Phitsanulok Province. The temple grounds still preserve the centuries-old stupa alongside newer structures that represent the community’s continued faith and adaptation to modern times.

Beyond its historical and architectural importance, Wat Aranyik is also rich in folklore and local beliefs. According to tradition, the temple once served as a residence for many monks who came here for meditation and monastic retreats because of its serene and secluded setting. Some legends say that during the Sukhothai period, kings and royals encouraged monks to practice at Wat Aranyik to set an example of piety for the people.

Local tales also tell of the ancient stupa enshrining sacred relics of the Buddha, making it a revered and holy site. Elders recount stories of miraculous events during restorations, such as mysterious lights glowing from the stupa at night or the sound of chanting echoing in the air when no one was inside the ordination hall. These stories are believed to signify the protective power of sacred forces guarding the temple and its community.

The surrounding moat is also tied to local beliefs, not only serving as an architectural feature but also symbolizing a protective boundary against malevolent spirits or misfortune. Villagers believed that those who observed Buddhist precepts and practiced meditation within the temple grounds would be blessed with peace, safety, and protection.

With its blend of history, architecture, spirituality, and legend, Wat Aranyik offers visitors more than just a glimpse of Thailand’s past. It is a place where faith and culture have intertwined for centuries, making it a remarkable destination for those interested in history, archaeology, and Buddhist traditions. Travelers who visit Phitsanulok should not miss the opportunity to explore Wat Aranyik, a sacred site where ancient heritage, religious devotion, and local folklore converge into a living testament of Thailand’s cultural identity.
