Wat Yang in Phitsanulok is an ancient Buddhist temple located along the Nan River in Ban Khlong Subdistrict, Mueang Phitsanulok District. It was officially established as a temple in 1855 and later received its consecrated boundary (wisungkhamsima) in 1918, reflecting its long-standing importance to the local community. Over the years, the temple has become a center for religion, culture, and social gatherings for the people living along the river.

The temple was mentioned in the royal chronicles of Prince Narisara Nuwattiwong during his visit to Phitsanulok. He noted seeing the scripture hall at Wat Yang, which housed four ancient cabinets decorated with different artistic styles: one with a standing angel, one with a walking angel, one crafted by artisans from Bangkok, and one covered in gold. Although not regarded as highly unique in craftsmanship, these pieces stand as remnants of old artistry. The Prince also described the ordination hall and sermon hall, which, though not exceptionally old, served as important religious structures for the temple.

The most significant sacred object enshrined at Wat Yang is the Phra Samrit Kosiy, more commonly known as Luang Pho Khiao. This Buddha image is in the posture of granting forgiveness and stands at 190 centimeters tall. It represents the Amaravati artistic style, blending Indian and Greek influences, and dates back to around 120–320 CE. What makes Luang Pho Khiao unique is its bronze material that has developed a natural green patina over time, which inspired its popular name, meaning “The Green Buddha”. The statue is not only an object of great artistic and historical value but also a spiritual anchor for the community and visiting devotees.

Today, Wat Yang continues to play an active role in the religious and cultural life of Phitsanulok. Annual Buddhist ceremonies such as almsgiving, Songkran water-pouring rituals, and the worship festival of Luang Pho Khiao attract both locals and visitors. The temple remains a place where faith, tradition, and community converge, while also serving as a significant cultural attraction for travelers interested in ancient Buddhist art and history.

With its historical foundation dating back to the reign of King Rama IV, the timeless artistry of Luang Pho Khiao, and the continuing devotion of the local people, Wat Yang is a site of profound religious and cultural importance in Phitsanulok. A visit to the temple offers not only an opportunity to pay respect to one of the region’s most revered Buddha images but also a chance to connect with centuries of Thai history and heritage.
