Its defining feature is a complete avoidance of electricity—every vendor relies solely on candles or oil lamps to light their stalls. This creates a dim, subdued atmosphere true to the market’s name and naturally slows the pace of both sellers and visitors.

Shopping by candlelight demands greater attention—visitors must look more closely, interact more with vendors, and truly engage with each item rather than browsing quickly under bright electric lights, as in typical night markets.

 

A common sight is vendors dressed in traditional Lanna attire, seated behind their candle-lit stalls. This detail adds a strong “local market” character, standing in contrast to the surrounding modern cityscape of Huay Kaew Road and the Nimmanhaemin area. This contrast is precisely what gives Kad Sum Muet its special charm.

Many stalls sell original branded designs in limited quantities, appealing to those who appreciate unique and unconventional items. Getting There Kad Sum Muet is held in front of Central Kad Suan Kaew shopping mall on Huay Kaew Road, within Chiang Mai city. If driving from Chiang Mai University, take Huay Kaew Road toward the Old City, pass Rin Kham Intersection, and continue for about 800 meters.
