Wat Prayatham is a historic Buddhist temple located in Kabin Subdistrict, Kabin Buri District, Prachinburi Province. The temple is regarded as one of the oldest in the area, dating back to the early Rattanakosin period during the reign of King Rama III. It carries a remarkable story that connects Thai national history, Buddhism, and the way of life of the local community. Built in 1832 by Chao Phraya Bodindecha (Sing Singhaseni), a prominent general of the Rattanakosin Kingdom, the temple symbolizes both gratitude for military victory and devotion to Buddhism. After leading a campaign against Cambodia together with Phraya Phirom, Chao Phraya Bodindecha founded the temple in Ban Kradon, Kabin Buri, to serve as a spiritual center for the villagers. The name “Prayatham” reflects the meaning of “the noble who acts,” pointing to the deeds of the general who established the temple as an offering of merit and a record of his service to the kingdom.

 

Over time, the temple grew in importance. In 1926 it was granted Wisungkhamsima, a royal boundary designation for ordination halls, which officially affirmed its role as a significant religious institution. The temple occupies approximately six rai of land and features traditional religious structures including an ordination hall, vihara, chedi, and various monastic residences. Though modest in size compared to grand temples in the capital, its charm lies in the integration of local craftsmanship with early Rattanakosin artistic traditions. The ordination hall, built with simplicity, embodies a solemn and sacred atmosphere. Murals once adorned its walls, narrating the Jataka tales and the life of the Buddha.
