Kabin Chaloem Rat Park is a large community park and wetland in Kabin Buri District, Prachin Buri, set right along Highway 33 around km 206–207 (Prachin Takham–Kabin Buri stretch). Locals also call the broad water body here “Nong Pla Khaeng.” The scene is calm and green—tree lines, emergent aquatic plants, and still waters that mirror the sky at sunrise and sunset—making it a gentle place to stroll, breathe, and photograph.

The park’s seasonal highlight is the arrival of migratory wild ducks from Siberia, which use the wetland as a resting ground roughly from October through May each year. You don’t need to trek deep into a forest to watch birds here—just stand along the paths and viewpoints. In the early morning and late afternoon the flocks are most active, gliding down to the water, feeding, and circling in loose formations.

The area was developed to commemorate King Rama IX’s 50th Accession Anniversary in 1996, hence the name “Kabin Chaloem Rat” (“Chaloem Rat” denotes royal commemoration). The older, colloquial name “Nong Pla Khaeng” points to the wetland’s freshwater ecology in the past, when catfishes (pla khaeng) were abundant. You can still find patches of red lotus and other aquatic plants, especially photogenic on windless days when water reflections are crisp.

Visiting tips: Aim for dawn or the golden hour before sunset for softer light and more bird activity. Bring binoculars or a camera with a telephoto lens (200–400 mm or more) and, if possible, a tripod. Dress in natural tones, keep to designated paths, avoid stepping into the wetland, skip loud noises and harsh flashes, and pack your litter out.

Getting there: By car, follow Highway 33 (Thanon Suwannason); around km 206–207 you will see the large pond and park area directly along the road with multiple informal parking spots. By public transport, alight in Kabin Buri town and continue by local songthaew or motorcycle taxi; the final stretch is short and straightforward.

What to do: Walk or jog along the paths, sit by the water, enjoy a quiet picnic, and observe bird behavior during the migration season. Families can turn the visit into a light nature class for kids—spotting ducks, herons, and pond life without leaving town.

Good to know: Surfaces may be slippery after rain; water levels change seasonally. Avoid approaching nesting zones, do not feed wildlife, and follow on-site notices from local authorities.
