Luang Por Phet is a highly revered Buddha image with great significance for both the people of Phichit Province and Chanthaburi Province. The original image of Luang Por Phet is enshrined in Phichit, which is its place of origin and the original sacred location. Later, a replica of Luang Por Phet was brought to Wat Bot in Mueang District, Chanthaburi, to allow local Buddhists easier access for worship and veneration. The abbot of Wat Nam Rak in Makham District, Chanthaburi, known as Ajarn Fon, invited the replica to be enshrined at the temple to enhance merit and faith within the community.
Subsequently, Mr. Jeang, who came to establish a fruit orchard in Sak Thai Subdistrict, requested that Luang Por Phet be placed at Wat Sak Thai, which in the past served as a monastic residence, located near Ton Khao Sak Thai in Pluang Subdistrict, Makham District. This enshrinement made it more convenient for local villagers to visit, pay respects, and make merit.
A remarkable event that strengthened community faith occurred when Mr. Jaek, a villager from Sak Thai, dreamt of a valuable object buried underground. He shared his dream with the villagers, and the local community joined together to dig at the site. However, due to the Buddha image being near a tree, they could not extract it easily. The villagers concluded that the discovered statue was indeed the same Luang Por Phet previously enshrined at Wat Nam Rak.
The image was then enshrined in the central pavilion of the temple, and the community built a dedicated hall to house Luang Por Phet permanently. The hall is located in Moo 4, Sak Thai Subdistrict, Khao Khitchakut District, Chanthaburi Province, and has become a spiritual center for both local residents and visitors from other provinces seeking to pay homage.
The sacredness of Luang Por Phet extends beyond local beliefs; it holds historical and cultural significance as well. The villagers’ collective effort in constructing the hall and preserving the image exemplifies the continuity of Thai traditions and beliefs. It also promotes faith-based tourism in Chanthaburi, as visitors come to worship and seek blessings for their lives.
Today, the Luang Por Phet Pavilion in Moo 4, Sak Thai Subdistrict, continues to be an important place for religious activities, including merit-making, almsgiving, and annual temple events. These activities strengthen community bonds and preserve the spiritual connection of the area.
The enshrinement of Luang Por Phet in Chanthaburi not only perpetuates local faith and culture but also symbolizes the connection between past and present. Villagers diligently maintain the image so that Luang Por Phet remains a source of spiritual guidance and communal pride.
Luang Por Phet Pavilion in Moo 4, Sak Thai Subdistrict, Khao Khitchakut District, Chanthaburi, is therefore not just a place for housing a Buddha image but a symbol of faith, community cooperation, and tradition. It has become a significant site for faith-based tourism in Chanthaburi Province.
