Phra Prong Reservoir is the largest irrigation dam in Sa Kaeo Province. It is located in Moo 3, Ban Rabo Hukwang, and Moo 6, Ban Huai Chan, in Chong Kum Subdistrict, Watthana Nakhon District. Much of the reservoir area covers forestland that was flooded as part of Pang Sida National Park, giving the surroundings a lush, natural atmosphere. The expansive water surface embraced by forested mountains creates a picturesque scene, making this place both an essential water source and a peaceful nature-based destination in Sa Kaeo.

Phra Prong Dam plays an important role in storing water from the Phra Prong River for agricultural and household use in Watthana Nakhon and nearby areas. The reservoir’s capacity allows effective water management during dry seasons. At the same time, the presence of a large water body within a natural forest creates a rich ecosystem, making the area an important habitat for various bird species and freshwater fish. It represents a harmonious balance between water management and nature conservation.

Walking along the dam crest, visitors can enjoy a wide view of the water stretching toward the horizon, with mountains and dense forest as a backdrop. The breeze over the water throughout the day creates a cool and refreshing atmosphere. It is an ideal place for a leisurely walk, breathing fresh air, or quietly admiring the calm scenery. Early morning and late afternoon offer the most beautiful lighting conditions, with soft sunlight and changing colors reflected gently on the water surface—perfect moments for photography.

Phra Prong Dam is also one of the most important bird-watching sites in eastern Thailand. Many resident and migratory waterbirds inhabit the area year-round. A highlight species is the Oriental Darter, known locally as “Nok Ai Ngua,” which is often seen perching on branches emerging from the water or swimming in search of fish. Many birdwatchers visit specifically to observe and photograph birds from boats or rafts. The unique scenery of tree trunks rising from the reservoir and flocks of birds across the expansive water surface creates a memorable bird-watching experience.

The reservoir is also rich in freshwater fish, making it a popular fishing area for both locals and visitors. Many restaurants around the dam serve freshly caught fish cooked into various dishes such as spicy soups, grilled fish, steamed fish, and fried fish with dipping sauces. Dining in the lakeside wooden pavilions overlooking the water adds to the relaxing atmosphere.

Visitors who want to explore the dam up close can hire a raft or boat operated by local businesses and lakeside restaurants. Raft tours offer a different perspective of the reservoir, allowing visitors to see the forested shoreline, partially submerged trees, waterbirds, and the play of light across the water. It is suitable for families, friends, or travelers who enjoy slow-paced nature excursions.

Getting There from Bangkok involves three main routes. The first route uses Highway No. 305 (Rangsit–Nakhon Nayok), continuing toward Watthana Nakhon. The second route follows Highway No. 33 (Saraburi–Nakhon Nayok–Prachinburi–Sa Kaeo) heading to Watthana Nakhon. The third route uses Highway No. 304 (Bangkok–Chachoengsao–Phanom Sarakham), passing the Khao Hin Sorn Development Study Center for about 2 kilometers before turning right onto Highway No. 359. All three routes converge at Watthana Nakhon Intersection, where you turn left onto Highway No. 3198 and continue for about 35 kilometers to reach Phra Prong Dam. Most of the road is paved and suitable for private vehicles.

Phra Prong Dam can be the main destination of a nature trip or combined with other attractions. Visitors often pair their trip with Pang Sida National Park (waterfall and butterfly viewing areas), Lalu (a natural sandstone erosion site), or other attractions in Sa Kaeo. Many choose to stay in Watthana Nakhon or Aranyaprathet and make a half-day trip to the dam. This flexibility makes the area suitable for various travel styles, combining scenic views, outdoor activities, and local dining.

The beauty of Phra Prong Dam lies not only in its function as a major irrigation structure but also in its peaceful natural setting. Those seeking an escape from busy city life will appreciate the blend of water, forest, birds, and simple lakeside lifestyles. The dam is suitable for families, nature enthusiasts, birdwatchers, photographers, and travelers who enjoy quiet natural spaces for relaxation.
