Somdet Phra Srinagarindra Park, Kanchanaburi is a large public park established in honor of Somdet Phra Srinagarindra Borommaratchachonnani (the Princess Mother) on the occasion of her 80th birthday, recognized as the 8th Srinagarindra commemorative park in Thailand. The park is located in Ban Thung Na Kharat, Nong Ya Subdistrict, Mueang Kanchanaburi District, Kanchanaburi Province, covering more than 600 rai. Its landscape stands out from other parks of the same series because the site preserves a distinctive natural limestone foothill terrain.
Locals commonly call it the “Stone Park” or “Rock Garden” because the area contains numerous natural limestone outcrops rising above the ground in many sizes. The highlight is the rock garden zone, covering about 200 rai, where the stones remain in their original positions rather than being arranged by design. This natural setting makes the park both a relaxing public space and a living classroom for nature study, while also functioning as a conservation-friendly green area.
Originally, the park was planned to be built in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province in 2525 B.E. (1982), at Wa Ko Subdistrict. However, due to site readiness issues, the project was relocated to Kanchanaburi Province within the same educational jurisdiction, where the terrain was better suited for developing a nature-based commemorative park.
Somdet Phra Srinagarindra Park, Kanchanaburi officially opened on 31 January 2531 B.E. (1988), with Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the Princess of Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra, presiding over the opening ceremony. Since then, the park has continued to serve the public as a key green space and a place for everyday recreation in Kanchanaburi.
The park features a variety of native plants and natural vegetation. The park’s symbolic tree is “Kanchanika,” a native species closely associated with Kanchanaburi. The park is also known for its wildlife sightings, with reports of animals such as barking deer, serow, wild rabbits, pheasants, and many bird species, reflecting a relatively healthy local ecosystem.
Within the park stands the Royal Monument of Somdet Phra Srinagarindra Borommaratchachonnani. The monument was officially inaugurated on 28 February 2543 B.E. (2000) under royal command, with Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Walailak presiding over the ceremony. This monument is a meaningful focal point for visitors and a reminder of the enduring gratitude and respect held for the Princess Mother.
Getting There The park can be reached from Kanchanaburi town via two main routes. The shorter route follows the ferry crossing near the confluence of the Khwae Noi and Khwae Yai rivers, passing Chong Kai War Cemetery and Khao Pun Cave, with a travel distance of about 9 km. Another option is via Saeng Chuto Road, passing the Allied War Cemetery, turning at Kaeng Sian Junction, crossing the Khwae Yai River bridge, and continuing toward Wat Khao Pun, with a travel distance of about 21 km.
