Khum Chao Luang is one of the most important historical landmarks in Phrae Province, Thailand. Built in 1892 by Chao Luang Piriyathawiwong, the last ruler of Phrae, this grand residence reflects a blend of European and Lanna architecture. The two-story structure is made entirely of brick and features 72 doors and windows, along with intricate wooden carvings. Today, it serves as the Governor’s residence and a historical attraction open to visitors.

 

The building stands on Khum Derm Road in the heart of Phrae city, representing the former administrative center of the region. Its architectural details, especially the carved wooden panels along the roof and eaves, highlight the craftsmanship of local artisans and the influence of Western design during that era.

 

Inside the building, rooms were historically used for administrative and judicial purposes. The central dark chamber served as a detention area for serious offenders, while the side rooms were used for minor offenses. This layout reflects the governance system of the time.

 

Getting There Khum Chao Luang is located in downtown Phrae. Visitors can easily reach the site by car, plane, or local transport from the bus terminal or airport.
