Coral Rock Mountain (Phu Khao Hin Pakarang) in Phrae Province is a unique natural attraction formed by the collapse of the Earth’s crust combined with long-term erosion processes that have taken place over millions of years. These geological changes have created rock formations that resemble coral reefs, which is the origin of the name “Coral Rock Mountain.” It is considered one of the most distinctive natural learning sites in Phrae Province.

 

The uniqueness of Coral Rock Mountain lies in the structure of the rocks themselves. The surfaces are rough, sharp, and irregular, with each formation having a completely different shape. When viewed as a whole, the landscape resembles a coral reef, but instead of being underwater, it is located in a forested area on land. This unusual appearance creates both a striking visual experience and a deeper understanding of the Earth's geological history.

 

Inside the area, there is a nature study trail with a total distance of approximately 1,100 meters. Although the trail is considered short, it is relatively challenging due to sections with sharp rocks and uneven terrain. Visitors are advised to prepare appropriately before entering the trail, especially by wearing secure sneakers or hiking shoes to ensure safety throughout the journey.

 

One of the most remarkable experiences along the trail is encountering what is known as “natural air-conditioning.” This phenomenon occurs when wind flows through narrow cave openings, carrying moisture outward and creating a noticeably cool breeze. The sensation is similar to standing in front of an air conditioner, but it feels fresher and more natural. This unique experience is often highlighted by visitors as one of the most memorable aspects of the trip.

 

As visitors continue along the trail, they will reach a viewpoint where the coral-like rock formations can be clearly observed. This viewpoint is an ideal spot for resting and photography. It is especially recommended to visit in the early morning when the sunlight is softer and the temperature is more comfortable. The Coral Rock Mountain is located within a national park area that also includes other notable attractions such as Kaeng Luang and Erawan Cave, both situated in Ban Pin Subdistrict, Long District, Phrae Province. From a travel planning perspective, Coral Rock Mountain is best suited for visitors who enjoy outdoor activities and nature exploration. Although the trail is not long, it requires caution due to the terrain, especially during hot weather conditions. Visiting in the morning is strongly recommended, as it offers both a safer and more comfortable experience.

 

Getting There is most convenient by private car. From Phrae city, take Highway 1023 toward Long District and continue into the national park area. The Coral Rock Mountain trail is located within the same zone as Kaeng Luang. Visitors can park nearby and walk along the designated nature trail to explore the area.
