Khuen Chong New Year Tradition, Nan Province is an important cultural tradition of the Lanna people that reflects their way of life, beliefs, and deep family relationships. It takes place during the Songkran Festival, which is considered the traditional New Year of Northern Thailand. This tradition is not merely a celebration, but also a period of spiritual cleansing, seeking forgiveness, and beginning a new life with auspiciousness.

 

The core of the Khuen Chong New Year tradition lies in merit-making and expressing gratitude toward those who deserve respect, including parents, relatives, and monks. Activities begin before April 13, when villagers prepare offerings, food, desserts, and clean their homes to welcome the New Year with purity and order.

 

On significant days, especially April 15, rituals begin early in the morning with the “Kan Tor” ceremony, which is the act of asking forgiveness from parents. This symbolizes respect and the intention to seek forgiveness for any wrongdoing in body, speech, and mind. Later in the morning, people go to the temple to make merit by offering food, desserts, flowers, incense, and candles, and by listening to Buddhist sermons to bring blessings into their lives.

 

After completing the temple rituals, participants ask forgiveness from monks as a sign of respect for religion. Then, more festive activities begin, such as Songkran water splashing and traditional games like “Mak Nim” and “Mak Khang,” which reflect the lifestyle of local communities in the past.

 

Another important activity is visiting respected elders in the village to perform the Kan Tor ritual. Villagers may also travel to nearby villages to ask forgiveness from elders they respect. This strengthens family bonds and community relationships. Afterward, everyone returns to help clean the village temple together, demonstrating unity and faith in Buddhism.

 

The significance of this tradition lies in creating auspiciousness in life, starting anew with a purified mind, and maintaining relationships within society. Respect for elders and mutual forgiveness are core values of Lanna culture.
