Wat Phra That Chom Phrik is one of the oldest historical temple sites in Nan Province, closely associated with the earliest phase of Nan’s formation. The temple is believed to be located within the area of the ancient city known as “Mueang Yang,” which many local scholars identify as the first city in Nan’s history. The stupa stands prominently on a raised earthen mound beside the Yang River, surrounded by ancient defensive structures such as moats and embankments, reflecting early urban planning in the region.

 

This site is not only a religious landmark but also an important archaeological area that reveals how early settlements were structured in the Lanna region. The elevated mound indicates intentional placement for visibility and symbolic authority, while the surrounding earthworks suggest a fortified settlement designed for protection and control.

 

Mueang Yang flourished during the mid-18th Buddhist century under the rule of Phaya Phu Kha, a foundational figure in Nan’s history. His reign marked the beginning of structured governance and territorial expansion. He established a network of cities through his adopted sons, Khun Nun and Khun Fong, who later founded Luang Prabang and Woranakhon (modern-day Pua), respectively.

 

Phra That Chom Phrik symbolized both spiritual devotion and political authority. Its prominent position highlights its importance as a religious and cultural center in the ancient city. Today, it remains a quiet yet historically rich site for those interested in Nan’s early history, archaeology, and cultural heritage.

 

Getting There The site is best accessed by private car from Nan city toward Tha Wang Pha District and the Mueang Yang area. GPS navigation is recommended due to its location outside main tourist routes.
