Ban Mani Phruek Security Development Project in Nan Province is a highland agricultural and nature-based travel destination located on the Doi Phu Kha mountain range. The area is known for cold-climate fruit cultivation, white Bauhinia flowers, wild Himalayan cherry trees, Chomphu Phu Kha trees, Pha Phueng Cave, Doi Pha Phueng, Phu Hua Lan viewpoint, and the local Hmong and Lua communities.

 

Ban Mani Phruek is one of the most distinctive highland destinations in Thung Chang District. The Security Development Project serves as an agricultural learning center that supports local livelihoods on mountain terrain. Visitors can explore experimental plots of temperate crops, observe highland farming practices, and experience the relationship between agriculture, community life, and mountain ecology in northern Nan.

 

The area is especially attractive for travelers interested in plants and seasonal scenery. Ban Mani Phruek features white Bauhinia, the provincial flower of Nan, as well as wild Himalayan cherry trees that add color during the cool season. The project is also located within the Doi Phu Kha range, where groups of Chomphu Phu Kha trees can be found. The healthiest accessible group is about 3–4 km from the visitor service center; vehicles can reach the trailhead, followed by a short walk of about 30 meters.

 

Ban Mani Phruek is also home to Hmong and Lua communities, making the trip more than a nature visit. Travelers can experience highland village life, local farming, and the cultural landscape of ethnic communities in Nan Province. The atmosphere is cool, quiet, and suitable for slow travel, especially from the late rainy season through winter.

 

One of the key attractions near Ban Mani Phruek is Pha Phueng Cave, located along the route to Ban Mani Phruek 1. It is about 1 km from the project office and about 100 meters from the road. The forest trail leading to the cave remains lush and natural. The cave entrance is about 40 meters wide and 20 meters high, and visitors must descend about 25 meters to reach the cave floor. The first chamber is large, with water dripping from the ceiling and forming rock layers that resemble a flowing waterfall.

 

Doi Pha Phueng is another important natural viewpoint near Ban Mani Phruek 3. This limestone mountain rises about 1,600 meters above sea level and has open grassland scenery similar to Doi Phu Wae. It is a beautiful spot for sunrise, sunset, and views toward Bo Kluea District, Doi Phu Wae ridge, and Doi Cho. From the starting point, visitors walk for about 20 minutes along the mountainside through scenic natural surroundings.

 

Phu Hua Lan viewpoint offers wide views over Chiang Klang, Thung Chang, and Chaloem Phra Kiat districts. Nearby is Phu Hua Lan Cave, which was historically used by Thai soldiers near an old operating base. This area is suitable for travelers interested in viewpoints, military history, and short nature routes.

 

Getting There requires taking Highway 1080 from Ban Na Nun around kilometer markers 77–78, then turning right toward Ban Mani Phruek. The route climbs along the mountainside and includes steep, winding sections with mixed dirt and paved road surfaces. A good-condition four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended, and the drive takes about 2 hours.
