Khun Sathan National Park in Nan Province is one of northern Thailand’s most scenic mountain national parks, known for misty viewpoints, cool highland weather, waterfalls, caves, pine forests, and peaceful camping areas. The park was developed from the protected forest area on the right side of the southern Nan River basin and covers parts of Na Noi and Na Muen districts in Nan Province. Its total area is approximately 285,826 rai, or about 342.49 square kilometers.

The landscape of Khun Sathan National Park is highly diverse. It includes mixed deciduous forest, dry dipterocarp forest, pine forest, hill evergreen forest, and dry evergreen forest. Important tree species include teak, pradu, tabaek, three-needle pine, and many native highland plants. This ecological variety makes the park an important conservation area as well as a beautiful destination for nature lovers.

Khun Sathan is especially popular during the cool season, when visitors come to enjoy cold weather, morning mist, sunrise views, and the blooming of Himalayan cherry blossoms. The park is suitable for travelers who enjoy camping, mountain scenery, waterfalls, and quiet natural surroundings away from crowded tourist areas.

One of the most famous viewpoints is Doi Ku Sathan, a mountain rising approximately 1,630 meters above sea level. The area has cool weather throughout much of the year and offers wide mountain views. It is one of the best places in the park to experience the atmosphere of Nan’s highland forests and layered mountain scenery.

Doi Mae Chok is another important highlight, standing around 1,424 meters above sea level. It is known for its cool climate, sunrise views, broad sea of mist, and impressive mountain landscapes. Many visitors choose to stay overnight in the park so they can wake up early and enjoy the morning scenery from this highland area.

The park also features several waterfalls. Tad Mok Waterfall is a large 3-tiered waterfall with a total height of around 50 meters, located near Doi Mae Chok about 3 kilometers from the village area. It is especially beautiful during the rainy season and early cool season, when the water flow is strong and the forest is fresh.

Pha Daeng Waterfall is a multi-tiered waterfall with 4 large levels, the highest of which is around 15 meters. It is located near Tham La Ong Cave, about 5 kilometers from Ban Chetawan in Santha Subdistrict, Na Noi District. The waterfall is suitable for visitors who enjoy quiet forest routes and natural scenery.

Tham La Ong is a large cave approximately 1.8 kilometers long. A stream flows through the cave, and the interior contains beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. Because of its length and natural conditions, visitors should prepare properly and travel with local guidance or park staff when exploring the cave.

Khun Lee Waterfall is another impressive natural attraction in the Doi Ku Sathan area. The waterfall is about 100 meters high, but access is difficult and requires around 4 hours of trekking through forest terrain. It is suitable for experienced hikers who are prepared for a more challenging nature route.

Kad Wua, located on the summit area of Doi Khun Huai Ya Thai, was historically a gathering area for wild cattle and gaur. It is about 5 kilometers from Ban Na Ka and requires around 6 hours of trekking. In the rainy and cool seasons, the area offers beautiful morning mist views and a strong sense of wilderness.

The upper Nan River area near Sirikit Dam also offers beautiful river and mountain scenery. Visitors can enjoy boat or raft trips through clear water surrounded by long mountain ranges. This landscape connects Khun Sathan with the wider natural geography of Nan Province and the Nan River basin.

Chao Pho Khao Khrueng Shrine is a respected local shrine located along the Rong Kwang–Wiang Sa road near kilometer marker 30 on the Nan–Phrae provincial boundary. It is regarded as a guardian shrine of Nan’s gateway and is commonly respected by travelers passing through the route.

Khun Sathan National Park is also known for nearby strawberry farms during the cool season. These farms add a seasonal charm to the mountain landscape and make the area especially attractive for families and travelers seeking a relaxing winter trip in Nan.

Travelers should plan for at least 1 night if they want to fully experience Khun Sathan. The park has accommodation and camping areas, and staying overnight allows visitors to enjoy the cool evening, stargazing, early morning mist, and sunrise views. Advance booking is recommended during weekends, public holidays, and the peak cool season.

Getting There from Phrae, take Highway 101 toward Nan for about 50 kilometers to Ban Huai Kaet in Rong Kwang District, then turn right onto Highway 1216 and continue for about 26 kilometers to Khun Sathan National Park. From Nan town, take Highway 101 to Wiang Sa District, continue on Highway 1026 toward Na Noi for about 35 kilometers, then turn right onto Highway 1216 and continue for about 31 kilometers to the park office.
