According to local oral history, Wat Nong Bua is believed to have been built around 1862, during the reign of King Rama IV.

 

The main highlight of Wat Nong Bua is its Tai Lue viharn, where the interior walls are covered with murals depicting stories from the Panyasa Jataka. These Buddhist narrative paintings are valuable not only for their artistic beauty but also for the way they record social life in the past. The murals show clothing, houses, boats, weapons, daily activities, and the cultural atmosphere of Nan during an earlier period.

 

The murals are traditionally associated with “Thit Bua Phan,” a Lao Phuan painter linked to the artistic tradition of Muang Phuan in the Luang Prabang region. Local accounts also mention Nai Thep, the father of Khruba Luang Su, and Phra Saen Phichit as assistants who helped complete the paintings. This background gives Wat Nong Bua special importance as a place where Lao, Lanna, Tai Lue, and Nan artistic traditions meet.

 

Among the most interesting details in the murals are images of steamships and bayonets, objects that began to appear in Siam during the reigns of King Rama IV and King Rama V. These visual details make the murals important as both religious art and social documentation. The depictions of women wearing beautiful sin nam lai and tin chok textiles also reveal the elegance of Tai Lue weaving and local dress culture.

 

Inside the viharn, visitors will also find the principal Buddha image, several small Lanna-style Buddha images, and an old Lanna-style busabok. These sacred objects add depth to the temple’s artistic and religious value. Travelers should take time to observe the murals quietly and respectfully, as Wat Nong Bua remains an active temple for the local community.

 

Another meaningful feature is the traditional Tai Lue house model, known locally as Heuan Tai Lue Ma Kao. It displays tools and everyday objects related to Tai Lue occupations and domestic life. Getting There is most convenient by private car. From Nan city, follow Highway 1080 toward Tha Wang Pha District. Around kilometer marker 40, turn left, cross the bridge, and continue for about 3 km to reach Wat Nong Bua. The temple can be combined with nearby cultural attractions in Tha Wang Pha and Pua in a one-day trip.
