Wat Mueang Len is a historic temple located on Mano Road in Nai Wiang Subdistrict, Mueang Nan District, Nan Province. Positioned along the western bank of the Nan River, the temple lies between Wat Tha Chang and Wat Don Kaew, approximately 2 kilometers from Nan city center. It is a traditional community temple with strong historical ties to the region’s past, particularly events related to conflicts between Siam and Burma.

 

The temple belongs to the Mahanikaya sect and occupies an area of about 3 rai, 2 ngan, and 46 square wah. It is officially registered with a land title issued in 1983. Its location within the urban community makes it easily accessible and continues to serve as a spiritual and cultural center for local residents.

 

Wat Mueang Len features several important structures, including the ubosot, monks’ residences, multipurpose hall, bell tower, library, and kitchen pavilion. A unique highlight of the temple is the traditional Nan boat racing museum, which showcases local heritage related to river-based culture and longboat racing traditions along the Nan River.

 

The principal Buddha image is a brick-and-mortar statue in the Mara Vichai posture, with a lap width of 72 inches. It serves as the central object of worship for the community.

 

Historically, the temple is associated with a period when Burmese forces from Mueang Ko-Mueang Len invaded Nan. They established a temporary camp in the present-day Mueang Len area and engaged in agriculture during their stay. The nearby riverbank, where elephants were bathed, later became known as “Ban Tha Chang.” The temple is believed to have been established during this period by a Burmese leader known as Chao Phraya Mueang Len.

 

The temple received Wisungkhamsima in 1984, marking its official status for conducting ordination ceremonies. Over time, it has been managed by successive abbots, and today it is led by Phra Khru Nitet Nuntawut, who has overseen the temple since 1991.

 

The atmosphere of the temple is calm and traditional, reflecting the simplicity of Lanna-style community temples. Visitors can explore the cultural exhibits, pay respects to the Buddha image, and learn about the historical significance of the area.
