Wat Bang Kluai is a local Buddhist temple under the Maha Nikaya sect, located along the Mae Klong River in Rong Hip Subdistrict, Bang Khonthi District, Samut Songkhram Province. It is an old riverside temple that continues to serve as a center of faith, religious activities, and local history. The temple stands out for its traditional riverside atmosphere, peaceful environment, and the revered principal Buddha image known as Luang Pho Sri Katlaya Kodom, commonly called Luang Pho Yai.

 

Wat Bang Kluai was established in 1807 (B.E. 2350) and received its royal boundary (Wisungkhamsima) in 1869 (B.E. 2412). Although the founder is unknown, historical accounts suggest that the temple originally shared land with Khlong Bang Kluai before parts of the area were eroded by water over time. This reflects the close relationship between the temple and the riverine landscape of Samut Songkhram, where waterways have shaped local communities for generations.

 

A significant period of development occurred when Phra Ajarn Phap from Wat Trichindawatthanaram was invited to serve as abbot. He led extensive renovations, including the ordination hall, monks’ residences, dining hall, drum tower, riverside pavilion, kitchen, and a Buddhist education school. Subsequent abbots continued these efforts, maintaining the temple’s structures and supporting local education and religious activities.

 

The heart of the temple is the ordination hall, which houses an ancient stucco Buddha image in the Mara Vichai posture named Luang Pho Sri Katlaya Kodom or Luang Pho Yai. The image measures approximately 3 cubits 1 span 5 inches in lap width and 5 cubits 2 inches in height. It is a central object of devotion for the local community, especially during the annual gold-leaf offering ceremony, which strengthens the bond between the temple and the people.

 

In addition to the main Buddha image, the temple features traditional teakwood structures such as monks’ quarters, a dining hall, and a prayer hall. These buildings preserve the architectural identity of traditional Thai riverside temples. Visitors can experience the charm of an authentic community temple that remains active, rather than a purely historical site.

 

Today, Wat Bang Kluai continues to host regular religious activities and annual festivals. Events such as the gold-leaf offering ceremony for Luang Pho Yai remain important traditions. The temple is currently under the care of Phra Khru Athornweerawat, who plays an active role in religious affairs within Samut Songkhram.

 

The temple’s riverside setting offers a peaceful atmosphere typical of Bang Khonthi District.
