Wat Phet Samut Worawihan, commonly known as “Wat Ban Laem,” is one of the most important royal temples in Samut Songkhram Province. Located in Mae Klong subdistrict, this temple serves as a spiritual center for both locals and visitors who come to pay respect to the sacred Buddha image “Luang Pho Ban Laem.”
The temple dates back to the Ayutthaya period and was originally called “Wat Si Champa.” In 1764, villagers from Phetchaburi migrated to this area and restored the temple, renaming it “Wat Ban Laem.” Later, it was elevated to royal temple status and officially named Wat Phet Samut Worawihan.
The highlight of the temple is Luang Pho Ban Laem, a standing Buddha image in the posture of holding an alms bowl, believed to have been created in the early Ayutthaya era. The image is closely associated with other famous floating Buddha legends in Thailand, such as Luang Pho Sothon and Luang Pho To of Bang Phli.
According to local belief, worshipping Luang Pho Ban Laem brings prosperity, success, and good fortune. Many visitors come to apply gold leaf and make wishes, returning later to fulfill their vows through traditional Thai dance offerings.
The temple complex includes an ordination hall, vihara, monk residences, and a museum displaying ancient Buddha images, ceramics, and historical artifacts. The atmosphere blends religious devotion with cultural heritage, making it a meaningful destination beyond typical sightseeing.
Getting There is convenient from Bangkok via Rama II Road, taking about 1.5 hours by car. Visitors can also take the Mae Klong railway and walk a short distance from Mae Klong Station to the temple.
