Wat Mo Luang is a historic community temple in Mae Moh District, Lampang Province. Located in Moo 1, Mae Moh Subdistrict, the temple has long served as a spiritual center for Ban Mo Luang and nearby communities. It was officially permitted as a temple in 714 CE and received its consecrated boundary in 1949, making it one of the old Buddhist temples associated with the local history and religious life of Mae Moh.

 

The temple’s boundaries reflect its close relationship with the surrounding landscape. To the north and east, the temple adjoins roads; to the south, it borders a cemetery; and to the west, it connects with a mountain area. This setting gives Wat Mo Luang a strong local identity, combining village life, Buddhist practice, natural surroundings, and traditional beliefs connected with life-cycle rituals.

 

The main structures inside the temple include a viharn, meeting hall, small pavilions, monks’ residences, sermon hall, kitchen, and restrooms. These buildings support both monastic life and community activities. The viharn serves as the principal worship space, while the meeting hall and sermon hall are used for merit-making, Buddhist ceremonies, community gatherings, and local traditions.

 

Wat Mo Luang is also connected with local cultural conservation. The temple has been associated with old mural paintings on teakwood panels, which represent the artistic memory of the Mae Moh community. These paintings are valuable not only as religious artwork but also as evidence of local craftsmanship, Buddhist storytelling, and the community’s desire to preserve its cultural heritage.

 

Although Mae Moh is widely known for its power plant and lignite mine, the district also preserves important cultural roots. Wat Mo Luang shows another side of Mae Moh: a place of old communities, village temples, Buddhist traditions, and local identity. Visitors who come here can understand Mae Moh beyond its industrial image and see the continuing role of Buddhism in daily life.

 

The temple is currently overseen by Phra Athikan Buntham Piyadhammo, who serves as abbot. He has completed Nak Tham Ek, the highest level of traditional Buddhist studies, and plays an important role in maintaining the temple, supporting religious activities, and serving the local community.

 

The atmosphere of Wat Mo Luang is quiet and simple, typical of a northern Thai community temple. It is not a large commercial attraction, but that is part of its charm. Visitors can experience an authentic local temple environment where monks, villagers, and Buddhist traditions remain closely connected.

 

During important Buddhist days such as Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, Asarnha Bucha, Buddhist Lent, and Kathin season, local villagers gather at the temple to make merit, offer food to monks, listen to sermons, and participate in community religious activities. These events help keep the temple at the center of village life.

 

Wat Mo Luang is suitable for travelers who are interested in local culture, village temples, and lesser-known heritage sites in Lampang. It can also be included in a Mae Moh travel route together with Mae Moh Public Park, EGAT Mae Moh, Mae Moh Mine Viewpoint, Mae Moh Market, and Wat Phra Phutthabat Sutthawat.

 

Visitors should dress respectfully, keep a quiet manner, and avoid disturbing monks or local worshippers. Photography should be done with care, especially around sacred objects, religious ceremonies, or areas used by the temple community.

 

Getting There is convenient from Lampang city by following the route toward Mae Moh District. Continue into Mae Moh Subdistrict and Ban Mo Luang. A private car or motorcycle is recommended. The temple can be visited as part of a cultural day trip in Mae Moh District.
