Wat Thung Kluai Photaram is a historic community temple located in Mae Moh District, Lampang Province. Surrounded by the quiet atmosphere of a northern Thai village, the temple reflects the long-standing relationship between Buddhism and local community life in this part of Lampang. Although Mae Moh is widely known for its large power plant and mining industry, the area still preserves many traditional Lanna cultural roots, and Wat Thung Kluai Photaram remains one of the important spiritual centers of the community.

 

The temple is located at 596 Moo 8, Mae Moh Subdistrict, Mae Moh District, Lampang Province. Originally established as a monastic residence, it was later officially granted permission to become a temple. Historical records regarding the exact construction date are unclear, but local residents believe the temple has existed for approximately 400 years, making it one of the old temples of Mae Moh District.

 

The name “Thung Kluai” refers to the old agricultural landscape of the area, where banana trees once grew abundantly across the fields surrounding the village. The word “Photaram” is commonly used in Thai temple names and refers to a Buddhist sanctuary associated with sacred Bodhi trees and religious practice.

 

The temple grounds cover approximately 6 rai of land. The northern boundary connects to a local irrigation canal, while the south, east, and west sides connect to village roads. Because of its central location within the community, local residents can easily travel to the temple for merit-making and religious activities throughout the year.

 

Despite the modernization of Mae Moh District, Wat Thung Kluai Photaram continues to preserve the traditional atmosphere of a northern Thai village temple. The temple has officially received Wisungkhamasima status, allowing it to conduct important monastic ceremonies such as ordinations. This recognition highlights the temple’s significance within the local Buddhist community and confirms its role as an established religious institution.

 

Wat Thung Kluai Photaram is currently led by Phra Khru Manoonkijprecha, who serves as the abbot. He has completed doctoral-level education and also passed Nak Tham Ek, the highest level of traditional Buddhist studies. In addition to serving as the abbot, he also holds the position of subdistrict ecclesiastical chief of Ban Dong area.

 

The educational background and leadership of the abbot have helped strengthen religious and community development activities within the temple. Local youth are encouraged to participate in Buddhist activities, listen to Dharma teachings, and engage with community traditions.

 

The atmosphere inside the temple is peaceful and simple, offering visitors a chance to experience authentic local Buddhist life in northern Thailand.
