Wat Metarang is a historic Mon temple located along the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River in Chiang Rak Noi Subdistrict, Sam Khok District, Pathum Thani Province. The temple is known for its distinctive Mon-style architecture, including an octagonal Shwedagon-inspired pagoda and symbolic swan pillars, reflecting the deep cultural roots of the Mon community in this region.

 

The temple was established in 1821 during the late reign of King Rama II. Originally named “Wat Pak Khlong Chiang Rak Noi,” the temple later adopted the name “Wat Metarang,” while its Mon name “Piamitrang” continues to represent its cultural identity. The temple received royal boundary consecration (Wisungkhamsima) in 1848, allowing it to perform full monastic ceremonies.

 

Architecturally, Wat Metarang stands out for its Shwedagon-style pagoda with an octagonal base. The pagoda is crowned with a brass umbrella finial decorated with intricate celestial motifs. The temple also features a teakwood prayer hall with strong hardwood pillars and a sermon hall adorned with “Hongsa” (swan) pillars, a significant symbol in Mon culture.

 

Inside the temple, visitors can find several Buddha images created during the tenure of Phra Athikan Sanga Silavanto, who served as abbot between 1904 and 1949. These Buddha images reflect early Rattanakosin artistic styles and remain important spiritual icons for the local community.

 

The temple continues to serve as a center of faith and cultural preservation for the Mon community in Pathum Thani. Traditional ceremonies and Buddhist rituals are still practiced here, maintaining a strong connection between religion and local heritage.

 

Getting There Wat Metarang can be reached from Bangkok via Pathum Thani–Sam Khok Road or Route 3309. Private transportation is the most convenient option. Visitors can also travel to Sam Khok District by public transport and continue by local vehicles to the temple.
