Wat Chiao Osot is a community temple under the Mahanikaya sect, located in Khlong Yai Subdistrict, Ongkharak District, Nakhon Nayok Province. This temple has long been closely connected with local residents. Although some sources previously stated that the construction date was unknown, official temple records confirm that it was established in 1923 (B.E. 2466), making it clearly over 100 years old.

 

The origin of Wat Chiao Osot is historically significant at the local level. It was not created as a tourist attraction but emerged directly from the faith of the community. Historical records indicate that Mr. Pliam and Mrs. Fak Chiao Osot donated 89 rai of land for the temple. Mr. Hwa Petchcha led villagers in fundraising and construction in 1923. The temple was named “Wat Chiao Osot” in honor of the donors’ family name. This reflects the traditional nature of central Thai community temples, where temples serve as shared spaces created, maintained, and passed down by generations.

 

Wat Chiao Osot is therefore not only historically old but also deeply rooted socially. Its name carries cultural memory linked directly to the donor family. The word “Osot” means medicine or healing, symbolizing the temple as a place of spiritual relief, while “Chiao” refers to the donor’s surname. Together, the name holds both historical and symbolic meaning.

 

The temple is located at 81 Moo 1, Ban Umong, Khlong Yai Subdistrict, Ongkharak District, Nakhon Nayok Province. The temple covers approximately 18 rai. To the north is the Rangsit–Nakhon Nayok irrigation canal, while agricultural lands surround the other sides, along with a nearby community school. This setting creates a truly authentic community temple atmosphere where visitors can experience simplicity, calmness, and the real rhythm of local life.

 

In terms of architecture, Wat Chiao Osot contains all essential components of a traditional Thai temple. The ordination hall (Ubosot) measures 7 by 23 meters and was built in 1969 using reinforced concrete. The sermon hall (Sala Karn Parian) measures 13 by 21 meters and was constructed in 1986 with a mixed wood-and-concrete structure. The temple also includes 10 monk residences, a viharn, and a funeral pavilion. These structures demonstrate continuous development to support both religious activities and community life.

 

The temple’s uniqueness is further enhanced by its sacred objects. According to available information, the temple houses a replica Buddha footprint, a viharn, and a replica of Luang Pho Sothon. Historical records also mention two ancient stone bells. These elements reflect the spiritual beliefs and cultural heritage of the local community across different periods.

 

The replica Buddha footprint symbolizes reverence toward the Buddha and serves as a reminder of his teachings. Meanwhile, the replica of Luang Pho Sothon reflects strong regional faith in one of Thailand’s most revered Buddha images. Having a replica allows local people to worship without traveling far.

 

The temple also plays a role in education. Since 1986, it has provided Buddhist scripture studies. Additionally, part of the temple land is used by a primary school, reflecting the traditional role of Thai temples as centers of both religion and education.

 

In terms of administration, Wat Chiao Osot has had a continuous line of abbots since its establishment. Recent data from the 2024 Kathin ceremony identifies the current abbot as Phra Maha Sayan Phonchano. This confirms that the temple remains active and continues to function as a living religious institution.

 

A major milestone occurred in 2000 (B.E. 2543) when the temple was designated as a “Model Development Temple.” This indicates strong management, well-maintained facilities, and its important role as a community hub.

Getting There is convenient by private car. The temple is located in Khlong Yai Subdistrict, Ongkharak District. From Bangkok, take the Rangsit–Nakhon Nayok Road and continue toward Ongkharak. Then follow navigation to Ban Umong. The coordinates 14.143830, 100.979963 make it easy to locate via GPS. It is suitable for a day trip or as part of a Nakhon Nayok travel itinerary.
