Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong is one of the most historically significant temples in Chiang Rai and is recognized as one of the sacred “Nine Chom Stupas” of the province. Located on a small hill near the Kok River in Mueang Chiang Rai District, this ancient temple is closely associated with the origins of Chiang Rai city and is believed to be the spiritual center or “pillar of the city.”

The temple is believed to have been established in 940 CE (B.E. 1483), long before King Mangrai founded Chiang Rai in 1262 CE (B.E. 1805). It was built during the reign of King Rueang Kaew, ruler of Wiang Chai Narai. The primary purpose of the temple was to enshrine sacred Buddha relics brought from Sri Lanka by a revered monk and presented to King Phaya Phangkharat.

According to historical accounts, the relics were divided into three parts and enshrined at three major sites: Doi Tung, Chom Kitti, and Doi Chom Thong. This made the temple a central place of faith and a significant religious landmark in Northern Thailand.

The main chedi features a Lanna-style design influenced by Bagan architecture. It has a hexagonal base, layered lotus moldings, and a bell-shaped body topped with a spire and umbrella. The structure is covered with golden plating, which enhances its beauty and helps protect it from moss and vegetation.

The temple also houses a viharn that blends Lanna and Rattanakosin architectural styles. Inside, visitors can find a bronze Buddha image in the Mara-Vijaya posture and murals depicting Buddhist teachings, creating a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere.

Another important highlight is the city pillar of Chiang Rai, located within the temple grounds. This pillar represents the spiritual center of the city. Visitors often come here to pay respects and enjoy panoramic views of the Kok River from the hilltop.

The temple hosts an important annual ritual known as the relic bathing ceremony, held on the full moon day of the 3rd lunar month (northern calendar). This event reflects deep-rooted Lanna traditions and local faith.

Getting There is convenient as the temple is located close to the city center. Visitors can easily access it by car or local transport, with parking available near the temple.
