Hall of Inspiration at Doi Tung

Open Days: Daily
Opening Hours: 08:00 – 17:00

Hall of Inspiration is located within the Doi Tung Development Project (Royal Initiative Area) in Mae Fah Luang Subdistrict, Mae Fah Luang District, Chiang Rai Province. It serves as one of Thailand’s most significant cultural and inspirational learning centers, presenting the royal initiatives and lifelong work of the Mahidol royal family through modern multimedia exhibitions. The primary objective is to provide both Thai and international visitors with a deeper understanding of sustainable development, ethical living, and the philosophy behind the improvement of people’s quality of life.

This place was originally known as the “Princess Mother Memorial Hall” dedicated to Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra. It was later transformed into the “Hall of Inspiration” to align with contemporary learning approaches that emphasize immersive experiences and emotional engagement rather than passive information consumption. The site is managed by the Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage, an organization widely recognized for transforming Doi Tung into a global model of sustainable development.

The exhibition focuses on conveying the royal philosophy and contributions of five members of the Mahidol royal family: Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, the Princess Mother (Somdet Ya), King Ananda Mahidol (Rama VIII), King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), and Princess Galyani Vadhana. Each of these individuals played a vital role in improving the well-being of Thai citizens in areas such as public health, education, environmental conservation, and socio-economic development.

Inside the Hall of Inspiration, the exhibition is divided into seven thematic rooms, each presenting a sequential narrative. The journey begins with the warmth and unity of the Mahidol family and gradually expands into broader themes such as societal challenges, national development, and sustainable solutions inspired by royal initiatives.

Room 1 presents the Mahidol family as a loving and compassionate family unit, symbolizing small drops of water that collectively create a powerful force for national development. It emphasizes the values of love, unity, and selflessness that shaped their contributions to society.

Room 2 tells the life story of Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra, from her early life as Sangwan Talapat, a common girl, to becoming the Princess Mother. This room highlights her perseverance, humility, and dedication, as well as her role in raising her children to become individuals who would significantly impact the nation.

Room 3 explores the return of the Mahidol family to Thailand following the 1932 political transition. It reflects the sense of duty and responsibility assumed by the royal family members as they took on roles of national leadership and became a source of hope for the Thai people.

Room 4 presents the hardships faced by Thai citizens across multiple dimensions, including poverty, environmental degradation, and social inequality. The room is designed as a maze, allowing visitors to experience the complexity of these challenges and understand the urgency of comprehensive solutions.

Room 5 showcases the problem-solving approaches of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), centered around the principle of “Understand, Access, Develop.” Through simple tools such as maps, pencils, cameras, and communication devices, the exhibition illustrates how close engagement with communities leads to effective and sustainable solutions.

Room 6 highlights the Doi Tung Development Project as a successful example of holistic development. Initiated by the Princess Mother at the age of 87, the project addressed issues such as opium cultivation, deforestation, and poverty through an integrated approach summarized as “Reforestation and People Development.”

Room 7 serves as the Hall of Inspiration, reflecting the mutual inspiration among the five members of the Mahidol family and how their shared values have influenced the Thai nation. Visitors are encouraged to carry forward these ideals into their own lives.

The surrounding environment of the Hall of Inspiration is enriched by the lush natural landscape of Doi Tung. The cool climate throughout the year enhances the visitor experience, making the visit not only educational but also rejuvenating for the mind and spirit.
