Wat Kamphaeng Kaeo is located in Moo 1, Ban Rong Khi Lek, Saphan Thai Subdistrict, Bang Ban District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province. It is a local temple under the Mahanikaya order with a history dating back to the late Ayutthaya period. Although it is not a well-known tourist temple, it has long served as a religious space and a place of collective memory for the local community, functioning as a temple, a religious site, and a cemetery for nearby residents.

 

According to historical records, Wat Kamphaeng Kaeo was established around 2281 BE and was granted Wisungkhamsima in 2289 BE. During a later period, the temple became abandoned due to changes in the community and settlement patterns. However, the site was never completely deserted; parts of the temple grounds continued to be used for rituals, especially as a cremation site and community cemetery, reflecting its enduring role as a sacred space connected to the life cycle of local people.

 

The temple is commonly referred to by locals using shorter names such as “Wat Kaeo” or “Wat Kamphaeng.” This informal naming reflects local familiarity rather than official designation and highlights the close relationship between the temple and residents of Ban Rong Khi Lek and the wider Saphan Thai area.

 

Wat Kamphaeng Kaeo occupies a large area of approximately 75 rai, making it relatively expansive compared to typical community temples in Bang Ban District. Within the grounds are various religious and community-related structures, including a brick-and-mortar ubosot measuring about 12 meters wide and 20.50 meters long, a sermon hall constructed of wood and concrete measuring 16 meters wide and 28 meters long, and 8 monks’ quarters built of wood and concrete.

 

In addition, the temple grounds include a chanting hall, a crematorium, and a cemetery. These elements are key reasons why Wat Kamphaeng Kaeo continues to play an active role in the daily life of the community. Although the temple no longer hosts full-scale monastic activities like temples with resident monks, these spaces remain central for important rituals, particularly ceremonies related to death and the dedication of merit to ancestors.

 

From a cultural perspective, Wat Kamphaeng Kaeo exemplifies the transition of rural society in Ayutthaya—from a temple once inhabited by monks to a community-based religious space emphasizing rituals and shared memory. Temples of this type can be found in several areas of Ayutthaya and are important for understanding the religious landscape and local history in greater depth.

 

Although there are no large annual festivals regularly held like those at temples with resident monks, Wat Kamphaeng Kaeo remains connected to Thai traditions through community activities such as funerals, merit-making ceremonies for the deceased, and in some years, Kathin or Pha Pa ceremonies held in cooperation with nearby temples. These practices reflect the flexible role of the temple within its local context.

Visitors can use a navigation app and pin “Wat Kamphaeng Kaeo, Bang Ban” from Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya city, head toward Bang Ban District, and then enter Saphan Thai Subdistrict. The temple is located in Moo 1, Ban Rong Khi Lek. The route is straightforward and suitable for those interested in exploring community temples and local history outside Ayutthaya Island.

 

Visitors should behave respectfully, as parts of the temple grounds function as a cemetery and cremation site. Loud noise and inappropriate photography should be avoided.
