Khao Luk Chang Buddha Footprint, Phetchaburi is one of the most revered sacred sites in Tha Yang District, harmoniously blending Buddhist faith with the surrounding natural landscape. The footprint is enshrined on the eastern summit of Khao Luk Chang. It is embedded naturally into the rock surface rather than carved later, leading many visitors to regard it as a sacred mark formed directly by the land itself.
The footprint measures approximately 5 feet in length, 21 inches in width, and about 9 inches deep at the toe area. These dimensions are clearly visible when standing nearby. In the early morning, when sunlight shines from the east, shadows along the edges enhance the depth and shape of the impression, intensifying both devotion and awe among visitors.
Although there is no definitive archaeological evidence confirming when the footprint first appeared, local oral tradition recounts that it was discovered by a hunter who lived in the area. While hunting, he became thirsty and climbed Khao Luk Chang in search of water, where he unexpectedly encountered the footprint. After sharing the story with villagers, the news spread from mouth to mouth, gradually transforming the site into a center of local faith.
As devotion grew, the story reached the Governor of Phetchaburi at that time. Villagers from Ban Tha Lao were assigned to help safeguard the site, and a formal report was submitted to King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). During his royal visit to Phetchaburi in R.S. 105 (B.E. 2429 / 1886 CE), on February 20, 1886, the King ascended Khao Luk Chang at dawn and personally observed the Buddha footprint. He subsequently ordered the construction of a pavilion (mondop) to enshrine and protect the sacred mark.
The royal visit and restoration initiative elevated the site beyond local legend. Khao Luk Chang Buddha Footprint became both a historical landmark associated with the reign of King Rama V and a continuing center of Buddhist devotion.
The pavilion that now shelters the footprint is modest in design, in harmony with the mountain’s natural terrain. Visitors must walk up stairways and natural pathways to reach the summit. The ascent represents not only a physical journey but also a spiritual one. Upon arrival, the open surroundings offer panoramic views of the landscape below.
An annual worship festival is held at Khao Luk Chang, during which residents of Tha Mai Ruak Subdistrict and nearby communities gather to make merit, offer alms, and pay homage at the summit. The event highlights the enduring role of the site as a spiritual center for the local community.
Getting There From Bangkok, take Phetkasem Road (Highway No. 4) through Nakhon Pathom and Ratchaburi toward Phetchaburi Province. After passing Phetchaburi town by approximately 20 kilometers, you will reach Tha Yang intersection. Continue straight for about 4 kilometers, then turn right onto the irrigation canal road (Canal Line 2). Drive for about 6 kilometers to reach a T-junction, turn right again, and continue for approximately 15 kilometers until you reach the intersection near Khao Luk Chang, where Wat Phra Phutthabat Khao Luk Chang is located.
Visitors are advised to dress modestly, wear suitable footwear for uphill walking, and allow at least 1–2 hours to ascend, pay respects, and enjoy the surrounding views.
