Attractions in Thailand

Ban Muang Kong is a small community nestled in the embrace of the mountains, located in Chiang Dao District, Chiang Mai Province. The first impression upon arriving in Muang Kong is the sense of tranquility and purity. The air is fresh, and the atmosphere is peaceful. The locals place great importance on conserving the forests, resulting in Muang Kong being abundant with fish, wild vegetables, and various herbs. The community is self-sufficient, relying on the natural resources available to them. A small river called the Mae Kong River flows through the village, and if you visit during the rice farming season, you will be greeted with lush green rice fields along both sides of the road.

Muang Kong is situated behind Doi Luang Chiang Dao, along the same route as Ban Na Lao Mai, which is home to Ban Ra Bieng Dao. To reach Muang Kong, you must travel an additional 24 kilometers on winding roads. Although the village is remote, it is not lacking in amenities. In fact, despite being a small village in the mountains, Muang Kong has minimarts, small restaurants, and basic services available throughout the village. The roads within the village are paved with concrete, making travel easy and convenient.

Visiting Muang Kong is about taking a break, staying in homestays, enjoying the view of rice fields, and embracing a laid-back lifestyle. Since Muang Kong doesn’t have many tourist attractions, you will find that the highlight of your visit is the fresh air and natural beauty of the rice fields. There are various types of accommodation available in Muang Kong, most of which are simple bamboo huts without air conditioning, only with fans. Although the village is in the mountains, the weather is usually warm except during the winter season when it cools down. For those who are sensitive to heat, there is one air-conditioned room available for accommodation.

Muang Kong also offers a few cafes and local restaurants serving one-plate dishes, grilled pork, and local specialties that are worth trying. Popular activities include bamboo rafting along the river, allowing you to appreciate the surrounding scenery and the trees along the way. In the winter, you can enjoy the beautiful sea of mist at the popular viewpoint, which offers a panoramic view of Doi Luang Chiang Dao.

Mon Chom Mok is a high hilltop accommodation offering a broad view of Muang Kong’s mountains and rice fields. The cottages are simple and private, providing a feel of staying in a mountain hut. The interior decoration, sitting areas, and even the fire pit create a relaxing and authentic atmosphere that fits perfectly with Muang Kong’s environment.

Traveling to Muang Kong can be done by starting from Chiang Mai city and driving towards Chiang Dao along Highway 107. Afterward, continue along the road until you reach Ban Na Lao Mai and then travel up the mountain for about 24 kilometers to reach Muang Kong. The road can be winding and steep, so it’s important to be prepared for the journey.

If driving is not convenient, you can also take a songthaew from Chiang Mai to Chiang Dao and then transfer to another songthaew that goes to Muang Kong. However, this route may be a bit challenging, so it's advisable to plan your journey carefully.

Muang Kong is the perfect destination for relaxation and immersion in nature. The traditional way of life preserved by the villagers, combined with the peaceful atmosphere and fresh air, makes it an ideal place for a getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you’re looking for a destination that offers peace, nature, and a sense of community, Muang Kong is definitely worth visiting.
