Baan Khang Wat, a must-visit attraction in Chiang Mai, is located in the peaceful atmosphere of the Rumphueng village near Wat Ramphueng. Surrounded by large trees and the charm of unique wooden and concrete architecture, this destination offers more than just a place to stroll and take photos. It is also home to restaurants, cafes, a library, local product shops, art galleries, and craft studios, where visitors can participate in workshops to try and learn new things. It serves as a hub for creative individuals from various fields, all in one place.
The story behind "Baan Khang Wat" begins with Mr. Nut (Nathapong Niannat), one of the founders of the project, who explains that the landowner saw the potential of the area, which is not far from Chiang Mai University. He began planning to make use of the space by collaborating with Mr. Big (Natthawut Rakkaphisit) to develop a creative village concept, where like-minded people could come together to do business and live collectively. This concept aimed to create an atmosphere unlike typical commercial spaces, where members could continue to meet and dine together after work, as if they were family.
When asked about the name "Baan Khang Wat" and its meaning, Mr. Nut explained that the name was chosen somewhat by accident. At the beginning of the project, there was no finalized name, but the team started calling it "Baan Khang Wat" because it was located next to Wat Ramphueng. Eventually, the name stuck and became the official name of the project, as it reflected the character and history of the place.
Baan Khang Wat opened in 2014, starting with ten two-story houses, each designed with its unique style. The architects designed a central open space that connects with the surrounding nature. Among the activities that have taken place in the project is an outdoor movie screening during its opening, which became a popular feature that helped the project quickly gain recognition. Additionally, small kiosk-style shops were added to simulate a lively atmosphere, creating warmth in the space.
In the second and third phases of development, Mr. Nut and the team noticed a positive response from tourists who were interested in crafts and workshops. This led to the idea of promoting crafts to a broader audience, involving local shops and talented artists to design activities that encourage the exchange of experiences and interactions with visitors. As a result, Baan Khang Wat became an "All-day Craft Market," offering various activities throughout the day.
Baan Khang Wat is more than just a tourist destination or a shopping spot; it is a community that welcomes people who appreciate art, small businesses, and meaningful activities. Members of this community are eager to welcome people from diverse backgrounds to come together, create new experiences, and exchange different perspectives. This dynamic environment has made Baan Khang Wat a lively and diverse space.
Thus, Baan Khang Wat is not only a place to visit but also a space that brings together a variety of businesses, arts, and creativity in perfect harmony. It is an ideal society that is open and invites everyone to contribute to creating a unique experience. It is a place where you can live and do business simultaneously, surrounded by nature and warmth.
