Together with Khun Big (Nattawut Rakprasit), they envisioned a creative village where people who share similar passions could come together to build small businesses and live alongside one another. The intention was to create an atmosphere unlike typical commercial spaces—so much so that even after shops close, members often stay to share meals and spend time together like a family.

 

The name “Baan Kang Wat” carries an understated yet meaningful origin. In the early stages, before an official name was decided, the team casually referred to the project as “the house next to the temple,” since it is located beside Wat Ram Poeng. Over time, the name naturally stuck and eventually became the project’s official title, as it perfectly reflected both the location and the character of the place.

 

Baan Kang Wat officially opened in 2014, starting with ten two-story houses, each designed with its own distinct identity. Architects shaped the shared areas around a spacious central courtyard that connects seamlessly with the surrounding greenery. Early activities, such as outdoor film screenings during the opening period, quickly became a signature feature and helped the project gain popularity. Small kiosk-style shops were later added, evoking the warmth and familiarity of a local festival atmosphere.

 

During the second and third phases of development, Khun Nut and the team observed strong positive feedback from visitors who were particularly drawn to craftwork and workshops. This led to a renewed effort to promote craft culture by encouraging local shop owners and artists to design interactive activities. These activities created opportunities for learning, experience-sharing, and genuine interaction between creators and visitors. Over time, Baan Kang Wat evolved into an all-day craft market, offering creative experiences throughout the day.

 

Baan Kang Wat is more than a tourist attraction or a shopping destination. It is an open and welcoming community for people who value art, small-scale businesses, and meaningful creative activities. Members of this community warmly invite visitors from various backgrounds to participate, exchange ideas, and co-create new experiences. The distance from the Old City or Nimmanhaemin is relatively short, but the final stretch runs through narrow residential roads. Visitors are advised to drive slowly and allow extra time for parking, especially on weekends when the area becomes busy.

 

For a relaxed experience, it is best to arrive close to opening time or later in the afternoon. These periods offer softer light for photography and a calmer atmosphere compared to midday.
