Chachoengsao City Pillar Shrine is located on Na Mueang Road in Mueang District, Chachoengsao Province. It is one of the most significant spiritual landmarks of Paed Riew. The shrine is not only a sacred place of worship rooted in traditional Thai beliefs, but also a reflection of the city’s historical formation, its defensive role in protecting the capital, and more than 180 years of continuous architectural development.

 

The construction of the Chachoengsao City Pillar Shrine began in 1834 during the reign of King Rama III. At that time, Chachoengsao functioned as an important frontier city of the Rattanakosin Kingdom, playing a strategic role in defending against Vietnamese incursions. The city pillar was therefore erected according to ancient belief as a sacred symbol to protect the city, strengthen morale, and serve as the spiritual center of the people.

 

During that period, city walls and fortifications were built alongside the installation of the city pillar to reinforce military and administrative security. Chachoengsao thus embodied both spiritual belief and strategic defense. The city pillar was not merely a sacred object, but an integral component of the city’s structural and symbolic foundation.

 

Later, in 1895 during the reign of King Rama V, the original pillar deteriorated and was replaced with a new pillar made of Makha wood. A ceremonial consecration was held on 14 July 1895. Both the original pillar from 1834 and the replacement pillar from 1895 remain enshrined within the building today, representing valuable historical evidence.

 

Although the original shrine carried deep historical significance, the structure itself was small and lacked the grandeur befitting the province’s status. Therefore, a new City Pillar Shrine building was constructed in 1997 to reflect its importance appropriately. On 3 June 1999, a royal consecration ceremony was conducted, marking a significant milestone in the modern history of the province.

 

Architecturally, the Chachoengsao City Pillar Shrine features a traditional Thai chaturamuk (four-gabled) structure with layered roofs in classical Thai style. The upper section is crowned with an elegant prang-style spire. Inside, the two city pillars—dated 1834 and 1895—are enshrined. Within the same compound stands the shrine of Chao Pho Lak Mueang, which is highly revered by local residents.

 

Rituals held at the City Pillar Shrine include traditional offerings, merit-making ceremonies, and prayer rituals. Many believe that the city pillar houses a sacred spirit that protects the province and ensures peace and prosperity. During important provincial occasions, formal ceremonies are organized to invoke blessings and auspiciousness for the community.

 

In terms of tourism, the shrine is conveniently located near major attractions in Chachoengsao. Visitors can easily combine a visit with Wat Sothon Wararam Worawihan, Ban Mai 100-Year Market, and the Bang Pakong River waterfront. This makes the City Pillar Shrine an ideal stop in a one-day city itinerary.

 

Getting There From Bangkok, visitors can travel via Bangna–Trad Road or Motorway No. 7 toward Chachoengsao Province. The shrine is located on Na Mueang Road within the municipal area. Parking is available nearby, and navigation apps can guide visitors directly to the site.
