The Chalermphrakiat 7th Cycle Birthday Anniversary Observatory, Chachoengsao is an astronomy learning center for Thailand’s eastern region, designed to give visitors of all ages a close-up, hands-on experience of the universe. It is located at 999 Moo 3, Wang Yen Subdistrict, Plaeng Yao District, Chachoengsao Province, on an area of about 36 rai. The observatory was established as an accessible science learning venue and has become a key destination for academic tourism in Chachoengsao. It has been operating since 2018 and is now a popular place for school groups, university students, families, and astronomy enthusiasts from across Thailand.
The observatory stands out for its well-structured blend of “knowledge” and “real experience.” Its core experience is built around three main components: a full-dome digital planetarium, an astronomy exhibition hall, and real-sky observations through telescopes. Together, these are designed to guide visitors from basic concepts to the excitement of seeing celestial objects with their own eyes.
Inside the planetarium building, a high-resolution full-dome digital projection system presents realistic simulations of star movements, the solar system, galaxies, and a wide range of astronomical phenomena. Regular showtimes are Tuesday to Friday at 11:00 and 15:00, Saturday at 11:00, 15:00, and 17:00, and Sunday at 11:00 and 15:00. Watching the planetarium show helps visitors grasp an overall picture of the cosmos before joining real observation activities.
The astronomy exhibition is free to enter and covers topics ranging from the solar system, seasons, and lunar phases to space technology and planetary exploration. It is suitable for both children and adults who want to build a strong foundation before participating in night-sky observation sessions.
A major highlight is telescope-based stargazing, especially on Saturday nights from 18:00 to 22:00, when the NARIT Public Night program opens to the public free of charge. Under the guidance of staff and science communicators, participants can observe planets, star clusters, and other seasonal celestial objects. This real-sky experience is distinctly different from learning through images or online media.
Getting There From Bangkok, take Motorway No. 7 (Bangkok – Chonburi) and exit at Exit 37 (Chachoengsao Interchange). Continue on Highway No. 314 into Chachoengsao town, then take Highway No. 331 toward Wang Yen Subdistrict. The trip typically takes about 1 – 1.5 hours and is most convenient by private car.
