Wat Khao Phra Phutthabat Bang Sai is a third-class royal temple under the Dhammayuttika Nikaya, located in Bang Sai Subdistrict, Mueang Chonburi District, Chonburi Province. It is a sacred site with deep historical roots, significant in both religious and cultural aspects. The temple is especially known for housing a replica of the Buddha’s footprint on the hilltop, making it a revered pilgrimage destination for devotees and a fascinating cultural site for visitors.

The temple’s origins date back to the Ayutthaya period, around 1706–1732, when it was first built by a king of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. It was once a thriving royal monastery but eventually fell into abandonment. During the reign of King Rama III, the temple was revived when His Majesty ordered Somdet Chao Phraya Borom Maha Prayurawongse (Dit Bunnag), who was serving as Samuh Kalahom (Minister of Defense), to lead an army to suppress a Chinese secret society uprising at Wat Kong Kalai in Bang Sai. Today, the former location of Wat Kong Kalai has become Bang Sai Fresh Market, with only a shrine and sign remaining to commemorate its past. After successfully completing the mission, Somdet Chao Phraya commanded the reconstruction of Wat Khao Bang Sai. The temple was officially re-established in 1841 and received its royal consecration boundary (Wisungkhamsima) in 1846.

Wat Khao Phra Phutthabat Bang Sai underwent another major renovation during the reign of King Rama V, led by Phaya Wichit Chonkhate, the governor of Chonburi, in collaboration with senior monks. Significant structures were restored during this period, including the mondop (pavilion) housing the Buddha’s footprint, a large chedi, the vihara (main hall), meditation halls, and a water reservoir. The temple’s importance was further highlighted when King Rama VI, during his time as a monk, visited on December 1, 1904, to pay homage to the Buddha footprint and meet with the abbot. Historically, the temple was also used as the venue for the royal oath of allegiance ceremony, or Taking of the Sacred Water of Allegiance, throughout King Rama V’s reign, emphasizing its political and religious significance.

The temple complex is rich in architectural and artistic value. At the summit of the hill lies a sacred reclining Buddha image, while the highlight is the mondop enshrining the Buddha’s footprint. Around the base of the hill are several European-style buildings dating back to the era of King Rama V, reflecting the Western influence that was spreading through Thailand at that time. These structures add a unique character to the temple, blending Thai religious architecture with historical Western elements.

Wat Khao Phra Phutthabat Bang Sai is also the center of important annual religious and cultural events. One of the most significant is the Buddha Footprint Worship Festival, held from the end of the fourth lunar month to the second waxing day of the fifth lunar month. During this period, crowds of devotees and tourists gather to ascend the hill and pay their respects, creating a lively and spiritual atmosphere. Another notable event is the Tak Bat Thewo ceremony, which takes place at the end of Buddhist Lent. In this festival, monks descend the hill to receive alms from the people, symbolizing harmony, renewal, and the continued practice of Buddhist traditions.

Today, the temple remains a vital spiritual hub for the local community and a popular destination for religious tourism. Its scenic location on a hill offers breathtaking panoramic views of Chonburi city, making a visit both a spiritual experience and a chance to enjoy natural beauty. The pilgrimage up the hill to worship the Buddha footprint combines devotion with the physical act of walking, symbolizing faith and perseverance.

From a historical perspective, Wat Khao Phra Phutthabat Bang Sai is an invaluable site for understanding the intertwined relationship between the Thai monarchy and Buddhism, as well as the development of Chonburi through different eras. Its past role as a royal ceremonial site illustrates the temple’s deep connection to the governance and spiritual life of the nation.

In modern times, the temple continues to thrive as a place of worship, cultural preservation, and community gathering. Its proximity to Chonburi city makes it easily accessible year-round for both locals and travelers seeking merit-making opportunities or cultural exploration. Visiting the temple offers more than just a spiritual retreat; it is a journey through history, faith, and the living traditions of Thailand.

Wat Khao Phra Phutthabat Bang Sai is therefore much more than a temple. It is a living testament to centuries of devotion, cultural evolution, and historical significance, linking past and present. Visitors leave not only with blessings and peace of mind but also with a deeper appreciation for Chonburi’s rich heritage and the enduring role of Buddhism in Thai society.
