Wat Takat Ngao, located on Sukhumvit Road in Takat Ngao Subdistrict, Tha Mai District, Chanthaburi Province, is a historic temple approximately 200 years old. The temple is particularly renowned for its mid-pond Ho Trai, or Scripture Hall, which showcases the craftsmanship of royal artisans from the late reign of King Rama III. It is believed that various components of the Ho Trai were brought from other locations and meticulously assembled using traditional wooden joinery techniques. The structure features a raised rectangular design with a tiered gabled roof. The front is adorned with carved wooden panels in vine patterns, with a central depiction of Thep Phanom, and gold leaf inlaid with colored glass. Surrounding the hall is a veranda that protects it from rain.
The Ho Trai holds great historical and religious significance. It is believed to have been established by Luang Pho Klai, also known as Luang Pho Son, the first abbot of the temple, who was skilled in medicine. He successfully treated a member of the royal family in the capital, and as a gesture of gratitude, the royal court granted the construction of this Scripture Hall as an offering to Buddha. The hall served as a repository for handwritten manuscripts and palm-leaf scriptures, especially the Tripitaka.
In addition to the Ho Trai, the temple houses many other ancient artifacts, such as the principal Buddha statue carved from wood, wooden sermon platforms, and other historical objects, offering history and culture enthusiasts a rich experience. Wat Takat Ngao was registered as a historical site by the Fine Arts Department in 2002. Although the exact founding date of the temple remains unclear, historical documents indicate it was officially established in 1827, during the reign of King Rama III.
Visitors can explore the temple daily without any admission fee. A visit to Wat Takat Ngao provides not only a chance to admire its exquisite architecture and the culturally significant Ho Trai but also an opportunity to experience the local community’s devotion and efforts in preserving this historical site.
